Just thinking about them yesterday, Juvenal!

Space is limited for them now, so we'll just have them in potato sacks. They're a quid each in the shops at the moment...:0(

Good grief we are still eating last year's leeks. Think we can wait a bit for sowing some more.

I'm with you, still plenty of got at. I view them as a good standby winter crop and don't see much point in trying to crop them too early. I've also noted that crops intended of over-winter have a tendency to bolt if started too early.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Another vote for a (much) later sowing. Since I've started waiting until latish April/early May I get very few, if any, bolters and they still get to the same size. In fact a few spare seeds I threw in last June have developed into good sized leeks.

As a rule I only use Leeks in casseroles/stews so for me I don't use them till late autumn. Any need for onion is satisfied by shallots earlier in the year.

I buy my leeks at the local market... 100 good sized transplants for 6€ is a no brainer so no sowing for me.

Varieties are so important with leeks anyway!

There is a vast difference between all three growing seasons, as we found out to our cost several years ago! We really only need them from November to March, so its Musselburgh or Winter Bandit.

You're lucky, this sort of thing seems to have died out in the U.K. 30 years ago I could pickup bunches of brassica or leeks from the market, but never see it nowadays.
