Which type of cloche??
« on: March 27, 2009, 13:16 »
We do have some pipe to make our own (or I might buy a couple as a little busy at the mo), but wondering what to cover with, or which are the best bought one's?
Netting, Fleece or Plastic?

We can't really pop to the allotment to take the plastic one's off on warm days, don't know if that rules them out or if that is not a problem at this time of year.

Primary purpose will be to pretect new seedlings from frost and wind (and maybe encourage them on a bit)

I use plastic for small seedlings at the moment. There's enviromesh over me brassicas because they are hard and I am more worried about insects on them. And netting over anything that pigeons like.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Netting wont protect from frost and wind,  and plastic might too warm on a sunny day, and you'd spend your nice sunny days worrying about your seedlings having a sauna down at the plot.

I reckon fleece is your best option, will offer a little shade from sun, and definitly fend off some of frost and wind.

I've never used cloches.  I always raise my seeds at home and plant out when a reasonable size.

I do sometimes cover young plants with a bit of fleece to keep them warm and keep the frost off.  You can leave that on all the time even on a hot day.  I cover all the plants that birds would find tasty with netting with a small enough mesh to keep the butterflies out too.
