Tomato Blight - still edible ??
« on: September 10, 2008, 17:25 »
I've done a bit of hunting and am pretty sure that the toms I've grown have blight. Are the toms are ok to eat if there not rotten ??
I wanted to put a picture on here but don't seem to be able to make it work ??

Also what should i do next year to prevent it happening ??

Just been and looked the plants and they all seem fine, the problem only seems to have developed on a yellow variety and after they were brought inside to ripen ??

Any thoughts ??

The tomatoes that have no signs of blight are fine Mark, and the ones that do have a bit, I cut off the blighted bit and give the rest of the tomato to the chickens or the dog.

But if fruits and leaves show signs of blight, just take them off and hopefully the remainder will be okay.  I almost stripped my toms of leaves last week, and I stil get the odd blighted tomato, but most of them are ripening nicely now!

Thank You Granny Anne

I seem to have curtailed the spread, by ditching the few with blight and leaving the rest to ripen - which is proving difficult in itself - fingers crossed there Ok

I decided to pick the ones which wern't blighted and ripen them inside. I had hundreds of them! Strangely the unblighted ones are one by one going brown. Today I'm making something involving a tonn of green tomatoes and freezing it - just off to the recipe forum

I had to pick my toms cause of blight...

Just wondered, can the tom plant go on the composter or does it need to be burnt because of the blight?

Its my first year....  an I am loving it!

If it's a hot fast compost, yes, otherwise, I'd burn or lose them or dig it up deep, somewhere away from growing area.
