Hi - new and already looking for help
« on: July 16, 2010, 14:10 »
Hi all,
new to the site and needing help.

I'm going to get a plot soon on a brand new site. I'm also on the committee of our site, and we're trying to collect information for all our allotmenteers, e.g. prices/discounts for top soil, sharp sand, manure...

Is there anything I need to look out for when it comes to sharp sand, other than how fine it is?

Which suppliers did you have your best experiences with?

I'd really appreciate your input, it would help us to get our site up to a flying start.

Thanks
Sandra

Welcome to the site

I'm going to pop your thread over to GYO as it's about GYO  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hello Sandra,

Welcome- you've found your way to a great place for help n advice.

So.why do you need sharp sand or so much you need advice about it??

Most builder supplies merchant yard places will do more for less (the bigger the bag the cheaper per quantity it is..up to a ton bag)...there's a lot of competition & so all  are pretty quick at delivering - it's just a matter of pricing.

The ton bags (hippo bags) are really handy for things like manure collecting & rotting down in.

Hi Togalosh,

our soil is heavy clay and looks like the best we can grow there are ashtrays... ;D
I was told sharp sand is the best to break up the clay over time, but am unsure if normal builder merchant's sharp sand is suitable for horticultural use.
Is there anything I need to look out for or can I go for the cheapest there is?

Sharp sand or grit is great for instantly helping to break up heavy clay as I know from experience. They call it "Cardumires" in my local builders' supply; tell them it's for horticultural purposes and don't get builders' sand as it is too fine.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Ha...I've learnt something new..but hell you'd need a lot.

I can't see it any of it being a problem..but then I've only used it for building.
