just a thought but how firm was they planted. I had the same problem two years ago. when i asked another plot holder if he new what the problem was he told me to heal them in well did that and no probs since. can not remember the variety though

I sowed directly into the ground, don't know if that makes a difference.

My soil is clay loam and sets solid like concrete in a dry year, so it is usually compacted. I have just collected some sprouts today and they are about 1.5 cm in diameter. Some of the plants are only a foot high and with small leaves.
The purple sprouting broccoli is doing well.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good large swede to grow? I can't grow swedes either. I had some good ones about 14 years ago but have not been successful since.

Just an update..We had lots of pigeon manure this year and my sprouts are looking much more promising. They are larger and healthier than ever before.
I also tried cauliflower 'Clapton' as recommended earlier in this thread. I just picked 2 caulis about 5" in diameter. Not huge, but a great improvement on previous attempts.
I did not add any lime as this conflicts with the manure and causes the ammonia to be released from the soil.
I will check for clubroot shortly.
