Title: Trickle feed/soaker hose .... no mains water pressure
Post by: rogertb on July 12, 2016, 11:10
Hi chaps, I have a water butt raised only enough so the tap's about 18" above the ground, I've put a timer on it (clockwork) and attached a soaker hose ... I thought I was being very clever ... trickle feed water to my runners but realised the hose only works with pressure. I tried cutting slits every 6" in an old bit of hose but, again, having no pressure the water finds the biggest slit and goes out through there only. Anyone any ideas please ?

Roger

I used a trickle feed hose, but had a bit more height, basically mine just dripped, but it kept the strawberries watered, I guess I had at lease 2 1/2 ft drop to the hose. when the hose was on a tap it gave about 6 foot fountains from the holes, but it was only a very cheap trickle hose from wilco's I believe

I use a dripper system rather than a soaker hose. My waterbutt is raised up a little (but only about 12 inches) and it works fine. I don't have a timer, the dripper let out about 1L per hour. The only problem I find is that because the water in the butt comes off the roof, the dripper can get blocked up but a quick shake every month or so seems to deal with it.

Get a cheap in line fuel filter from a car spares shop and fit it "In-line".
They're about £2 and will stop any seeds or grit blocking the dripper.
If the flow starts to slow down, just rinse it inder a tap.

There is a filter which gets rid of all the larger bits but it still blocks up eventually. Its not really a problem, I just need to remember to unblock it occasionally.
