All apart from potatoes are in raised beds - someone told me you should never water onions - is this correct ?

There's a lot of truth in that, as if you overwater, the plants don't bother to make much root as there's enough at the surface. If you get a real drought or stop watering, then you're in trouble!!

I only water in dry spells...usually once a week for 1/2 an hour with a sprayer or leaky hose.  If you do water it's important you make sure it's down at the roots...for those areas with hosepipe bans i would sink a plant pot near the roots so that the plants get every last drop.

Certainly not within one month of harvesting them.  I ditto the comments above ... the more you water the lazier the plant's roots are at finding their own.

Are your toms in pots...if they are you will need to water pots every day inside.

Outside i would check and see if the compost is dry before watering.

... might like to know I've been to my allotment this morning on my way to work.  I watered my two poly greenhouses on Sunday and went to check on them this morning.  The soil is still damp despite having had warm sunny weather since Sunday, so I haven't watered.
