How often should i be watering my allotment vegetables?

All apart from potatoes are in raised beds - someone told me you should never water onions - is this correct ?

... gardening book at the weekend and that said that with the exception of shallow rooted crops and fast maturing crops (lettuce, radish, salad stuff, etc) that the vegetable patch should be watered just once a week.

There's a lot of truth in that, as if you overwater, the plants don't bother to make much root as there's enough at the surface. If you get a real drought or stop watering, then you're in trouble!!

Certainly not within one month of harvesting them.  I ditto the comments above ... the more you water the lazier the plant's roots are at finding their own.

Are your toms in pots...if they are you will need to water pots every day inside.

Outside i would check and see if the compost is dry before watering.
