Broad Beans - Can I sow now
« on: May 19, 2010, 13:19 »
I planted some weeks ago 5 broadbean seeds in a propagator on a window sill and 5 direct out in my raised beds. I am still learning with seeds so thought I would see what is the best way to start things off. Either inside or outside so that I can plan better for next year.

I planned to put the seeds from inside out on the lotty once they had grown. Problem is they did not and the ones started off outside are now about 5 inch tall and very healthy looking. I planted anoth row of 5 to fill the gap about 6-8 weeks ago and not a plant did appear.

I now have a gap and would prefer to plant another row of broadbean seeds to see if they catch up now it is a little warmer.

Question is, is it too late for broadbeans or should I fill the row with something else.

I don't really know, but I planted out my broad bean plants (started off in newspaper pots indoors) last week and finished off the row with some broad beans (seeds) in the hopes that I may get a staggered crop. One has already poked its head through - still waiting for the others. The original plants are looking extremely healthy despite the cold snap.

Certain varieties are listed as "late sowing" http://www.molesseeds.co.uk/flower_and_vegetable_seed_store_uk/chart-broadbean.html From what I gather late is May - so you're cutting it fine.

Personally Id fill the gaps with something else.

Broad beans do not need propagators inside as you've found out. It's way too warm for them & no doubt the seed rotted.

They are hardy and can be sown outside in the Autumn to over-winter.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Aunty dont tempt fate we lost 4 batches complete right off, murdered the plant before it had chance to get a hold.

Fingers crossed the batch at the moment are spot free (is that tempting fate)  ???

Mine were sown in paperpots, kept on a north facing window sill until about 3" high, then hardened off in the cold frame. They have now been planted for about 4 weeks and are around 2' high with flowers and pods forming.
I would sow them directly in the ground now.

Nothing to worry about. Since giving everything a right good soaking with the hose on Sunday and possibly the warm weather all 5 have popped up in the past 3 days.

I normally just water with a watering can as there is often a wait for the one and only tap. Perhaps a hose is the better option.

It just goes to show patience and a little change in the weather can help.
