I have grown Butternut Squash for the first time this season and we love its taste and versatility.

I planted four plants this year and got 8 Squashes from them, is this about average?
I am planning for next year and I am wondering how many plants ans space I will need.

Were they the big butternuts (fruit not the plant) like you buy in shops, or the smaller fruiting ones like Harrier?

I had 3 small fruit on each Harrier bush (a nontrailing variety more like a courgette) and wasn't really impressed with that

So will be interested what other people managed to harvest as well

I planted mine 1 mtr apart and had 3 off each plant, but think they were a bit late going in(end of june). Cut them off on sat. and removed the plants, where i noticed lots of baby ones, but didnt think they would come to much now.

I have got 8 bns from 3 plants. they are still in the ground as they are not very large. I am undecided whether to pull them up or not.

Wow, that's over two times heavier crop than I got.
It just shows the benefits of having a more southerly climate

I'm also down south and managed to get 6 decent sized, and 4 smaller ones from my one, donated so don't know what variety, plant. I did follow Johns recommendations on how to grow pumpkins / squashes from the original book. Worked for me !

I think I had 6 plants (they mingled and I forgot how many I planted) and most of the results are shown below.

I also had two late ones planted at the end of the shed on a frame.... they shared with the on-their-way-out sweet-peas but only made two large and a few of smaller ones not pictured.

Warmth and rain seem to be the keys... not had a huge amount of either this summer.

Hi, i don't think it was a very good year for bns,s i usually aim for 4 per plant from 4 runners pinch the others out, but was lucky to get 1 per plant, i think it was a bit dry for them.

What spacing is best? and do they need plenty of water? we love bns would like as many as poss next year>

I harvested 9 good sized bnut squash from one plant and between 6 and 8 from each of the other three plants

Twelve good sized and seven smaller squash so 19 from four plants.
Sweet Mamas not so good 7 from four plants.

3 plants, 2 BNS - pathetic!!!! However, I love challenge and will keep trying!

8 from f plants but they were only about 18 inches appart (spread to quite an area though)

one of the BNS was 6pound heavy, thats a big roast dinner

12 from 2. Small variety, mostly 2-3lb each.

Over 100 gem squash from 7 plants though!
