I think it's an old bloke's tale. Popular amongst many but probably useless and a good way of getting extra chemicals into your crops.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Not to mention that it's not actually legal any more for that purpose, for what it's worth...  8)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you tell me (a retailer) that you are going to be usuing it for soil steralisation and I still sell it to you - guesswho gets a fine!  Same as if you tell me the glass I'm selling you is for a door and I don't sell you reinforced I sell you ordinary.

I've allways used jays fluid to steralise the inside of the greenhouse, usually midwinter when nothing's in there, incuding spraying the soil borders in the greenhouse.

Is that illegal as well? and if so why!!
As the great Percy Thrower used to say

As I've posted before - it happened at the same time creosote was  banned.  It is to dowith one of the ingredients -  the EU (Bless Them) said it was carcinogenic.  Jeyes were only allowed tocontinue to produce if they didn't allow it to be used for soil steralisation and only for discenfectant purposes otherwise it would have been banned as well. Also it's probably for the same reasons that we have lost a lot of our well loved weed killers.

Why on earth would anybody want to pour chemical disinfectant on their soil!!
And then eat produce grown in it?

That's one old boys tale I won't be following, I've never heard any thing so ridiculous.

I'm assuming Jeyes fluid is unable to distinguish "good" insects/larvae/bacteria from "bad".

First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

I did use it to scrub out my greenhouse with this winter though. Took about a fortnight for the fumes to clear.

I used it in my greenhouse last year, the smell lingered for ages and I`ve never had as many pests there before,at least the hoards of spiders stopped it getting worse!!

If you can no longer use Jeyes for soil sterilisation and green house disinfectant, what can you  use?

If I've read Wighty post correctly you can still use it disinfect your greenhouse.

While I wouldn't want to sterilise my soil with anything there's actually nothing stopping you using Jeyes fluid as long as you don't tell anyone!
I'm not sure what you could use that's legal.  Slug pellets maybe.

Incidentally (going off a tangent slightly - sorry Aunty), did anyone see that Horizon program last night saying that non-organic veg contains 40% pesticide residue.  Or did I mis-hear?  Why that didn't put the professor off buying non-organic I don't know, even if they do say its safe!

Edited to say:
I did mis-hear (or mis-remember).  40% of non-organic veg contains detectable pesticide residue.  3% at an unsafe level.

intresting topic this
I have just got some jeyes for my gh upon reading the rear of the can it states it can be used to freshen the water in your butt by adding 5ml of it to a full butt
so whats the difference between using on your soil or pouring it in the water butt then using that on your plants.... :?
Sanity is just a playground for the un-imaginative
