Hi everyone, this is my first posting so I hope it goes in the right place. First time growing potatoes in containers and my main crop did not flower. They are dying back so not sure whether to carry on watering. Any advice would be appreciated

Not all potatoes flower, so you may not have done anything wrong.

Which variety are they, and when did you plant them?

Hello and welcome to this great and friendly forum. I suggest having a little furtle underneath one of the stems to see if there are any potatoes there and if they look ok to use.

just to check, there are drainage holes in the bottom of the container?

we decided sorry my O/H decided we should grow all our early potatoes in tubs not altogether in favour of this but i went along with it as you do to keep the peace

but i have to say our potatoes grew in  tubs have been very good and they where a tad early to those i grew in the allotments over the past years so yes it was a good idea the only downside was the tubs took some filling with compost but then after pulling the potatoes the spent compost was used for other things so i suppose it equalled its self out

and just to add to this topic a friend of ours must have left some of last years potatoes in the ground that he never harvested and they have produced one hell of a crop of potatoes that he dug for new potatoes unbelievable they grew again so well

If they're dying back because they are 'done' there's little you can do to get them going again - you could try a feed but be prepared for it to have little/no effect. As GG says a furtle will give you an idea of what's there now - that could help to decide whether to give them a feed. Personally I'd try a feed if the spuds are small but would continue to water as necessary until they've gone over completely whatever.

The crop is Picasso and yes, there are drainage holes. I will try furtle and let you know. Thanks for advice
