The dangers of de-seeding chilli peppers...
« on: September 22, 2011, 06:49 »
Mrs Growster has overseen a huge crop of various chillis this year and we're freezing, ristra-ing, eating as many as we can, before the plants eventually die down, (or get put away for next year's growth, which is a new idea).

We both use rubber gloves for the job, which is fiddly, but makes for a good time to sit down and share an hour's chat.

And I'll be the first to: -

1) Leave just one pesky seed behind
2) Leave a single pesky sq. mm. of white inside pith behind
3) Chop them too large, and have to do the job twice
4) Use too much cling film (to wrap an ice cube size for the freezer)
5) Touch my eye, chin, nose, face, etc etc just a nanosecond before I take the rubber gloves off...

And the etc etc could - allegedly - mean - er - yes, nearly that...;0)

I just remembered in time...;0)

And I thougt one of your dangers would be not wearing gloves in the first place.  ::) I did that once when chopping chillis for chutney, then rubbed my eye.

I did a chilli last night for our curry.  It was still blisteringly hot even after the seeds had been removed.  Sheesh  :D  Good job I only used the one

I'm not prepping chillies at all any longer, not after the first time. They stay whole whether for drying, freezing or hanging. Saves all the pain and choking  :)

Do you just mash them all up the CQ?

I'd say that was better, as the heat becomes a cheaper option, if you see what I mean!

For my curry I used a fresh one which I split and scraped the seeds out. I sliced it thinly.

When preserving a batch I don't cut into them at all, preferring to leave them whole. That way is safest, whether freezing or drying. I aint going there again  :D

When confronted with a large amount of chillies you don't want to be breaking them up as that's when they give off horrible choking gas which gets into your airways and makes you cough your lungs up.  I did it once, never again  :)

small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

  :D

I just had to add that I'm just getting ready to go to the bank so I changed into my posh new warm fleece. It's a very ladylike one from M& S which has two slash pockets which meet inside in the middle, like a muff. Anyway I'd washed and ironed it and put it away some time ago. I just put my hands into the pockets only to feel something yucky, dry, crumbly and horrid.  It was a washed, dried and squashed red chilli

Still, it should keep my hands warm

Last year I had a glut of chillies and diced them all for the freezer. I had the sense to wear gloves, but managed to get a hole in one, which developed into a tear exposing my index finger. I shrugged and carried on.

Foolish me   The said finger was numb for two days and tingled for several days after that.

And, even after several washes and days later, every time I touched my eyes, eyebrows and my ''ahhemm' resulted in pain.

Lesson learned.  :)
