Silly compost questions.
« on: April 03, 2012, 19:55 »
What is the difference between general purpose compost and compost specifically for sowing seeds in?

Is compost for sowing seeds in finer?
Does it have more or less nutrients (if any)?
Has it undergone heat treatment to sterilise it?
Can you use old compost, riddled very finely, then microwaved to sterilise it for setting seed in?

Nosey sod aren't I?

Seed compost is supposedly finer (usually is fine, but some general purpose ones are too) and had fewer nutrients, as seedlings don't need much to start with.

All compost sold in bags should really be sterile ie no weed seeds in it

Your idea of sterilsing old compost would be possible I suppose but I have never done this.

My Dad used to make his own seed compost and sterilise it is the oven though

You would not believe how nasty soil smells while being steralised.     BEWARE !    ::)  Cheers,     Tony.
