Chicken poo...

does it have to rot before you put it on plants? like with horses?

Just wondering as i add it to my compost heap at the moment (as it has shavings and hay in). But wondered if this is the right thing to do?

Thanks,

You have to leave it to rot down first (same as with horse poo) as its too strong to put around your plants fresh. I add my muck from the chickens (including the shavings and shredded paper) to my compost bin.  It wont be used for a few months so it should have rotted down well by then.

I'm doing  t he same, although since getting the chickens I think I'm gonna have to get a new compost bin as its filling up a little too fast for my liking.

No such thing as too much compost!!!
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Talking of which - was digging some compost out of the bottom of the bin for my veg bed last weekend; turned my back for a moment and she was in ...

Had to pull her out in the end, I was afraid the whole lot was going to come down on top of her

And I promise I wasn't actually shovelling Jean into the bin, she just used the spade as a bridge up from the path

Certainly a direct way of getting the poo straight into the compost :)
