Squirrel
« on: September 09, 2020, 19:38 »
I have grown used to paying an annual tithe in sweetcorn cobs to a squirrel that lives in the trees behind my plot.

He is a plump, brazen fellow, who strips all the green walnuts and hazlenuts (before they ripen) from the trees behind my shed. He has too much attitude, by far..

He surpassed himself today by half-carrying, half dragging a sunflower head bigger than himself across my plot, up a fence and into the trees where he resides.

If he develops a taste for leeks and sprouts I'm going to throw in the towel...

I call them "tree rats". Other than caterpillars, they are my most vexing pest, especially when I am starting seedlings in pots (which they dig up).

Best cure is a small angry dog.  Praise the dog with treats every time it chases a squirrel.  Soon, it will be more focused on the chasing (fun), less on the treats.  It doesn't matter that my dog never catches a squirrel, the chasing is a deterrent.  This may not be practical if you are on an allotment / share space with other people.
