allotment fees going up is it true??
« on: April 10, 2023, 15:54 »
I read the other day that councils are puttng up allotment fees up by as much as 400%, is this going to be the death of the allotment,i hope not as they help people so much, and the government is encouraging people to get more exercise and enjoy outside spaces??.
Will it effect you and your family.
May be its only some areas or it may not even be true who knows.

Depends who is running the allotments in question. If you are self managed to have an association/comittee working on behalf of the council the uplift is a lot less. Mainly because we aren't paying out council employees.

I am in glasgow and paid £34.50 this year. But from next year they are going up to £170 or something. It's quite the hike, but for me it's still good value at least. They will have to introduce paying monthly though, I pay a one off payment but if people have to stump up that in go it'll put a lot of people off and there are a lot of pensioners (who will pay less but still much more than before) and disadvantaged people with plots.

Glasgow are trying to justify their hike by saying they haven't put their prices up since 2012.  The more cynical  thought is that if they put people off because they can't afford it, it will reduce their waiting list and they wont be obligated to find more growing space.

I'm lucky as our allotment is run by a SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation) our fee's are the same as last year and we also get lottery funding to have 2 employees managing the site.

Mine has gone up from £146 to £153 so not a big increase. However it is already one of the more expensive and is a grade B 10 poll plot so others in our borough will be paying more.

Looks like I’m lucky only paying £34 only up a couple of pounds in the last 5 years.
Interestingly new allotment renters have to pay a £150 security deposit to cover costs of rubbish etc left on plots. Unfortunately it looks like our plots could be a building site in few years though.
Keep digging

Same here, still £40 for a full plot.

ETA: Council run plots.
