Would sand just not make it more squidgy and hold int he moisture?
I use comfy bed from our local equine store it soaks up the water and makes it less muddy
Gained an allotment on the 19th June 08, 135ft by 40ft! eekk. Finally after 4 years it is looking like an allotment and not a jungle

We have 5 lovely hens in the garden, fish, 2 dogs and 2 canaries

Really cheap option is a bale of straw whilst you roof. Ypu could burn, compost or bag and put in landfill bin.

Its bedding for horses, like wood chip. we pay £6 for a huge bag, it breaks down naturally as well, each year we take a good layer of the dirt out and replace with some more comfybed and take the dirt to the allotment for manure

we found straw very slippy when wet and mixed with mud but you may not

The equine stuff is excellent, especially Aubiose, but there are cheaper ones such as Easibed

They are very good at absorbing moisture. Your hens will appreciate getting their feet out of the wet and it saves paddling muck into the bedroom  :)  It will compost as well given time

other good equine bedding is Hemcore and Rapport, both are extremely absorbent and is what I use in my walk in rum as well as in the coops.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Miscanthus is another really good and cheap option.
