seed drills .the machines of a bygone age

anybody use any of these type of seed sowing machines anymore?

a simple seed drill early 50s

a sexton seed drill 1930s -40s i have a very untidy rusty version of this type

have seen a wolf seed sower and i am goin to get one,

i can sow a row in les than ten mins with mine . just use a line to mark the row digs it out sows the sed at the rate i want and then covers it up , only werks with kernel seed tho .grass seed types its useless

the wolf one is realy good you can adjust it for different size seeds and the distance between each seed

I've seen those in Leroy Merlin in Calais - thought it was a bit more than £20 though.
Shaun, I'm going over soon - do you want me to pick one up?
Karl, what do you think - worth it or look around for an old fashioned one?

I have a wolf one. and i am not very impressed. its ok on small seed but the gearbox smashed when i tried to use it on the larger seed. i am fancying a earthway one. they sometimes come up on ebay.

I have one of those earthway ones. not used it yet. Got it from Northerntools (in the uk) when they had a special deal on. If I remember right inc del it was about £50.

They dont seem to have them on the UK site but they are on the USA one still HERE

john if there about that price would you mind gettin me one,i have the handle but if it comes with the handle then so be it chears

i seen them a while back at stapley or bridgmere and thought they were a gimmick,but when i seen a plot where one has been used it changed my mind,the lettuce were perfectly spaced aswell as the carrots,beetroot and parsnips,i can handle big seed frankie its them lettuce and carrot seeds that are a curse

No problems Shaun - can't promise but Madam usually lets me have a 10 minute wander around the DIY if I've been a good boy

not only will mash its gear box on big seed it needs non mudy soil to turn the wheel. All that said it spaced the great but but but nothing grew

:shock: I am sure it smashed the seed dead before spaceing them correctly

!!.

dad has a big old yellow drill with red wheels and a swinging marker bar I will find it and post a pic for Karl. Brove and i spent many a unhappy hour pushing the thing well all our mates were off surfing :cry:
