Greenhouse question...
« on: April 01, 2008, 21:47 »
I have just been given an aluminium 8x10 greenhouse in good condition by a neighbour on ther proviso that I dismantle and chuck it over my fence.
How do I go about doing this??? I take it it's glass out first!!!

Thanks, looks like it needs a slight clean and I have found a home for it in between two raised bed.

Would it be better to place it in full sun, near full sun or partial shade!????

mine is in a bit of shady place but i had no choice, and noticed today that it had hit 30c sometime since sunday,if i could i would put in full sun if i had the choice.
a good jet washer is what you need to clean it,give the frame a good soapy wash(i use washing up liquid) then a blast off and once the glass is back in it do the same to that.

If you can then short ends should be east to west  so one long side is south facing to get the most sun, a full sun position is best IMHO

I got an aluminium greenhouse from a neighbour 500 yards away and two people carried the frame intact.  Life was made easier by labelling and making a plan of where all the glass goes when you re-assemble it.  Job done.

I know, thats what happens when you are young (35) and live amongst the older generation they feel that they have to impart their knowledge and vegetable related gifts on you.

My other neighbour has just given me cuttings of comfrey, chives, lemon balm, bay tree and has another 10 cubic metres of soil so I can build another two beds for next year!!!

I bet they want a veg box in a few months!!!!!! :D

Have removed glass, lifted frame and base into my garden without a problem. I set the base and used the metal brackets that came with it in to hold it to the ground.

Have managed to crack 3 panes of glass.....oops...

Will be putting in a breathable membrane cover it with chippings and using some slabs as a path.

Hope to get it up and running before end of April as I now have to go away on holiday for a week!!!!! Shame

It's in and operational. Have just finished leveling it as on the first attempt I put the frame in bent and the glass did not fit properly. Now corrected and have put in black liner to prevent weed growth.

Only broke three panes of glass and had to buy a pack of new clips. So whole  greenhouse has cost me £15. Bargin.

It's now been standing for five days and it seems that things grow better behind glass than plastic, probably lets more light in!!!
