Heater for greenhouse (of sorts)
« on: November 08, 2019, 12:54 »
I bought one similar to this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1960s-Rippingilles-Super-Sunrise-Paraffin-Kerosene-Portable-Heater/202795846250?hash=item2f37930a6a:g:xBMAAOSw-INdnMgw&redirect=mobile
But it's more of house one. The greenhouse is double glazed with heavy insulated roof. It uses far to much paraffin and the greenhouse is a little to hot. It only cost me £20. As the room is also a sort of garden room I will use it for my personal use. But for cold night I want to keep the room warm as I have got lots growing in there. I can get paraffin for £1.15  a litre which I believe is reasonable.  I have got a camping gas cooker with a blue bottle on but it's small bottle and I am not sure the end cap will take a large bottle nor am I sure it will work out cheap (the gas) would probably be able to run at lower heat though. Any views? I am guessing the size of the greenhouse is roughly 3 metres by 2 metres.

CC, it seems that unless you need tropical heat, the large heater you have may be over the top! I'd feel unsafe with the gas one if the connection is uncertain too.

We managed to keep a frost-free greenouse area warm enough with one of these lamps https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hurricane-Storm-Lantern-Light-HL200-Oil-Parrafin-Lamp/162252273718?hash=item25c6fd3836:g:fF0AAOSwTM5Y5xc9 for several years, but, is it possible to get electricity to the room and get one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/90W-Tubular-Heater-Electric-Tube-Greenhouse-Shed-Garage-with-Guard-2FT-4-705mm/362437916015?hash=item5462fbb56f:m:mIZXupaxAj9XRpiOuO6lJxg ?

Apols for the links, but it saves having to describe them!

The gas connection isn't unsafe I just assumed that bottle might not fit connection.  I am informed it will. But not sure on price of gas relative to Parrafin.  No electricity I'm afraid  far to far from the house. The lamp looks like a possible.  Good price.
I am wondering about this as an idea. I ordered envirofleece from https://www.pestfreegardening.co.uk/frost-protection/envirofleece-30g.html
But someone made a cock up and instead of sending me a 7 metre length of the 1.6 metre wide fleece they sent 7 one metre lengths!  This is heavy weight fleece designed to protect plants down to -6c. I wonder if I put this over the plants say an hour before sunset it would have the same effect as a heating the room??
