badgers & sweetcorn
« on: July 18, 2013, 18:18 »
Last year many sweetcorn plants were pushed to the ground and the ripe cobs were taken.  Word was that it was badgers.  They attacked many different allotments and took 2/3 at a time.

My question is, what would anybody suggest as a barrier against them, would simple netting and sticks be enough or will they just trample those?

We had a badger expert visit our site as the whole boundary along our side is a set.

He dug into our plot at one point and we had to give bqck a chunk to the council as he was causing chaos, we now have two to three inch half rounds driven into the ground two foot each. They are working but we have only done the back corner and the long term plan is to keep goin around the whole plot  two foot down and chain link heavy duty fence is the only one that will work otherwise. The question is can you live with it or without.

The badger man thinks we have seven at least on our site

mjg000,
Are you sure that the culprits are badgers?

Grey squirrels decimated my sweetcorn last year.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.
