Bean poles
« on: April 10, 2009, 23:38 »
Anyone know where's best to buy Uk ethically sources beanpoles (coppiced hazel etc)?  Im struggling to find anything in local garden centres or on internet and refuse to buy imported, dubiously cut canes!

Google "coppice association".

If you have space, you could take a long term view and plant some Hazels. Ten should do, then in five years time you can start cutting one a year for a few poles. If you build the munty frame, you won't need many poles.

I've had the same problem recently & found that there was stuff available in England but not in Wales.  Luckily the wardens on a nearby nature reserve have been coppicing & hedge making hurdles & they let me have a bundle of poles that were too thin to be of any use to them.

Thanks for the tips.  I'm in Dunblane, Scotland (near Stirling).  Suppose I could just go wander the woods and bound to find something.  No room to grow hazle, unfortunately.  If anyone knows of any suppliers in Scotland, or will deliver here, let me know.

Cheers

Kermit? Couldyou put your location in your profile please? It makes it so much easier to tailor your advice to you when we know your location. Thanks!

Look along the top of the page Sian, see where it says profile?  Click on that, On the left, click on Forum Profile Information and type your location in.  Doesn't have to be too detailed, you don't want all the world turning up on your doorstep, but mine just says nr Boston, Lincs!!!

It might be a bit late this year, but if there is any hedgelaying or coppicing being done near you by the BCTV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), you could go and help 'clear up' and come away with some poles.  They might want you to help with a bit of cutting as well ....
