Hazel bean poles
« on: January 01, 2019, 11:28 »
Hi,

Thinking ahead I might use hazel bean poles this year.  Before I make the investment (quite a bit dearer than the normal bamboo sticks) I was wondering how long they'd last.

I assuming they are good for more than one season?

Looking at 8-foot, 1-inch diameter ones

Our land is very silty so it is subjected to getting wet and I find any permanent structure from wood doesn't last. As beans and peas can normally be grown in the same place I got some tall green plastic poles from a local farm and garden shop for roughly £1.50 each and am going to use those instead.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

They will do a few seasons, but do eventually go dry and brittle, before the bamboo would.  Hazel looks better in the border - Monty Don's tripods etc - but on the allotment or in a veg garden, I would spend your cash on good quality bamboo.  Have a look around on the web if you need a lot of them ... the price inc delivery can be very good.  We have bought 2 lots of 8' ones that way, shared with neighbours.  Courier hated them, they were very heavy!  I'll ask OH where they came from.

I ordered thick diameter canes on ebay - the initial postage is quite high so worth buying a job lot for the £s

Buying canes online is a bit hit and miss...

One year they were too thick to fit the cane jointing balls we have, so I had to sand them all down, the next time they were so thin as to be useless as they rattled around in the holes!

I think this year, we'll shop around locally, even buying some longer ones and cutting them down to suit. I know it's pricier that way, but at least you can see exactly what you want!

I got some lovely hazel poles locally from Leeds Coppice Workers at £10 for 10.  They are very sturdy and withstood the weight of heavy bean crops and wind on our exposed site much better than bamboo.   They have just finished their second year of service and look as good as new.  I wouldn't go back to bamboo now.  I didn't find bamboo sturdy enough and didn't think it lasted particularly well either.  At the back end of the season I was always having to resort to guy rope arrangements and canes kept snapping.

Is it hazel which can take root when used as a pole - just like a large cutting?

They definitely look great in a garden!
