Herbs on Windowsill
« on: February 18, 2008, 15:09 »
Hello.
Newbie here, while I was waiting for the weather to turn and seeds to arrive, I thought I would pot up some herbs in the kitchen to keep me amused - but I am now worried that I have got it wrong!

They don't seem to be growing a huge amount, and the basil only has one set of leaves per plant.

Anyone got any thoughts on what/ if I am doing something wrong?

Thanks

Look a bit leggy and pale, ie not enough light. If you've got any seed left, I'd be tempted to start again, put on a lighter windowsill, with a tinfoil screen this side of the plants to give them more light on both sides.

Also don't overwater.

Ordinary seed compost should do.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

I agree with Scribbler - you need a window with direct sunlight (& not frosted glass!) streaming in (south facing) and try the tin foil idea too.  You could try & salvage what you already have - the basil followed by the coriander don't look toooo bad, but the parsley  :? does look over leggy.

And sow some fresh seed too, but - WHAT does the instruction say on the seed packet:  I'm almost positive most herbs should not be sown until March/April?  They also need heat, particularly basil, as well as lots of sunshine otherwise they will not grow healthy at all!
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
