Bare rooted plants
« on: September 04, 2011, 15:27 »
I bought some bare rooted plants earlier this year when I took on my allotment. I've only just got around to making to space to plant them - will they still be ok??

I've had them in the garage where it is cool and dark since March.

I have 2 'Malling Jewel' raspberry and 1 'Ben Lomond' blackcurrent. If they're definitley not worth planting, I'd rather buy some new one's now rather than finding out next year.

Any advice??

I'm afraid they are probably dead after so long, as MoS said. Bare root plants really need to be planted as soon as you get them. If not into the ground then into a pot to keep them going. If you want to check you could try putting them in a bucket of water for a week or so. If they are alive you will see tiny little white roots start to appear.

Keep in mind that planting raspberries is a long term investment. Even if there are still any signs of life they have missed a season and are unlikely to grow into decent plants.

Cut your losses and buy some more.
