Lost all mine last year to a late frost.  I will be starting them off next week, or if very cold the week after, in the greenhouse and will not plant out till beginning of June.

This is how I see it panning out if sown indoors today (approximations, of course):

13th Apr - germinated and showing above compost.
20th Apr - seed leaves fully open and main growing shoot starting to extend.
27th Apr - shoots starting to wind round each other and roots through the bottom of pots - high time to harden off.
4th May - time to plant outdoors whilst you can still just about untangle the mess!

Actual safe time to plant outdoors - almost certainly not until the last week in May, even where you are, and possibly later if this year is anything like the last few (late frosts will kill, low temperatures will induce sulking!)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Runner beans come up so quickly if it is warm, so that is one crop I don't rush to sow too early. First week in May is good enough for me.

Not yet - just think; you may be eating runners for about four months...

Do you want that?

Me too. A couple of years ago when we redesigned the back garden I didn't make time to plant my runners out so they got all tangled up. I spent 1/2 an hour trying to untangle them without success. So in desperation I pruned them down to the 1st two leaves & hoped for the best and

they were the best runners I had ever grown :D Very prolific.

Aw Grans...

Runners have a certain season, and after that we get fed up - literally!

Same with brussels! Even leeks - well, it's summer soon, so they don't figure do they...

Mid to end of April sowing for me too.  You can sow earlier but I find that later sowings catch up with the added warmth and there is not much to be gained. :)
