Growing Strawberries on Trestles or Tables
« on: June 25, 2019, 13:14 »
We can often learn from the commercial growers. They have to grow decent crops with minimum labour to keep in business. This reader is asking about growing strawberries off the ground to avoid some of the problems of growing strawberries in the ground.

Here are my outdoor strawberries. Grown the like this for a few years and it certainly avoids predation by most small mammals and/or birds and hugely reduces mollusc damage too. Several other on our site have now made tables out of pallet wood rather than grow in the ground

Table frames being thrown out by a local school!!! Metal legs are harder for rodents to scale, although squirrels do leap up and cling on of course Usually less effort to go elsewhere though lol

Hello againg John, one of my numerous ideas was to grow strawberrys in a galvanised trough wide enough for one row slung below a strong scaffolding pole structure, raised and lowerd by chains!

The appearance of a 6' larch lap fence to the sunny side of our veggie patch prompted this 'flight of fancy'.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Does that mean constantly watering?

Watering is always more of a problem when growing out of the ground. I have to do the hanging basket strawberries daily. I suppose the commercial growers use driplines or similar.

Does that mean constantly watering?

They need watering at least every other day when the weather is hot, and also need feeding more often than plants in the ground, but the yield is good, clean from mud and rarely slug-slimed
