Flymo XL500 Mower - another one for Gwiz
« on: March 29, 2010, 08:49 »
Hi all,  Since new (2years) this Flymo has given good service easy starting etc but there is one curiosity- there is no change in speed when the throttle is advanced!! - is this normal?             The engine is Honda GC160 OHC, 4 stroke.   Engine comes off choke OK.  :)

Any comments please.

Ah, that does sometimes happen.
Occasionally it's a governor problem insofar as it's not been adjusted correctly, although that's quite rare with Honda.
On the hover mowers, it's more often than not because the idle speed screw has been wound right in ( the mower won't hover correctly on idle, so rather than having machines returned as "faulty" the screw is wound in so the machine is on high revs all the time)

I expect that this is the case with your mower. :)

Thanks Gwiz, but the speed  sounds quite low, not much different from start up speed although the mower does hover (just).

I think it's going to be one of those "I need to see it" problems. I often come across Honda engines that over rev when coming off of choke, but I can't remember the last one that was too slow.
There is, on some models, a governor screw. It looks like a long-ish bolt with a spring around it. A small adjustment on that can make a little difference to top end revs.

Thanks again Gwiz.  I have been in touch with Flymo who gave me the number of the local agent.  He said it needs setting up - as I got it from a box shifter off the net- this was not done - Buyer Beware!!! ( but I saved a lot of cash)
