A Glamour Girl?
« on: March 13, 2011, 10:32 »
I have a hen that keeps putting a stick on her back making odd churring noises.  She'll walk around with it on her back as long as she can.  She's been doing this for about two weeks now, and gets quite upset if I try to take it off. ::)  Is she trying to be posh or is this a secret hen ritual?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

It could be the start of being broody

Hens often carry chicks around on their backs, while making the churring noise :)  Maybe she has bypassed the sitting and gone straight to being a frustrated wannabe mum!

Hhhmmmm, now that you mention it, she hasn't laid an egg in about two weeks.  She's still keen to come outside all day though.  Tilly is a Calder Ranger or Columbian Black Tail.  I didn't know they carried their chicks on their backs.  That really explains a lot!   :D

I have a broody who keeps picking bits up and putting them on her back, hadn't really thought anything odd about it until this post, I just assumed it was a broody habit but she's the only one that does it.
