When I took on my overgrown plot just over a month ago I was told the giant overgrown thistle (7 foot tall!) was a globe artichoke. Then someone said that it was cardoons???
Whatever it gets chopped back and covered this Autumn.
Anyone know the difference? The first flower appeared this morning.

If they are seven feet tall they are cardoons. Globe artichokes only go up to about three feet.

They look like cardoons , the flower tends to be more upright and smaller than the chokes, got both , will double check if it stops raining. :)
Gillie, my chokes are thriving on neglect and must be nearer 5ft :D
Been and had a look, i still think cardoon. :)

Just had a bit of a google and the leaves look much more like Globe Artichokes - not grown either so wouldn't like to say really...

Yes, I think you may be right. Better let the flower arranging plotter have them!
