Title: Potimarron
Post by: jambop on February 15, 2020, 09:27

So the wife bought a Potimarron to make a "special soup" and as it was it turned out to be delicious, so I was asked to grow some in the garden. I thought about it and looked on the internet and there seems to be a thought that the seeds of this squash can be saved and sown . So the question is what does the team think can the seeds ofthe potimarron squash be saved for sown? It is not an F1 variety these things would appear to be an heirloom veg.

Yes, you can save seeds as long as you can make sure it isn't pollinated by a different varieties. Potimarron is a cucurbita maxima type, so can cross with any of those you also grow, plus it can cross with any cucurbita moschata (butternut types)

Best option is to only grow one type or cover the potimarrons with fine netting and hand pollinate them.

Further to mum's reply is the question of whether the seeds from your bought squash will grow true to type - impossible to know without giving them a try, although fingers crossed that commercially grown squashes would be less likely to have cross pollinated with others than those grown near many other types in a typical home or allotment situation.
