Title: Wood Burning Stove
Post by: mellowmick on May 17, 2006, 15:29
Generally expensive unless you get lucky; Here's a method for making your own small version; with some help from a friendly welder;

Take a big steel bucket; old fire buckets best. Your chimney flue hole should be cut in what was the bottom of the bucket (thin end) because the whole thing sits 'the wrong way up'. Cut a circle of steel mesh and weld it (inside the bucket) to the sides, about 1/4 of the way down from the rim. This is where your fire will sit; the mesh allows the ash to fall through. Cut and weld a solid steel plate over the mouth of the bucket, then fit four equidistant 'feet' around the rim for it to sit on. You then need to cut two openings; one between the thin end and the mesh (for putting the fuel in) and one between the mesh and the base plate (for taking out the ash). Then cut, shape and fit doors to these holes. Voila.

Hi - think this would actually make a good web page with diagrams or photos.

The picture from your allotment is to die for - absolutely brilliant :)

You would be best fitting 3 legs to it, three legs are always stable no matter what the surface is like that it is sat on. :wink:

Good idea though, would like to see some drawings too. 8)

What a cool idea, now where is my old bucket and metal cutters.  Just a quick thought could this be done with any metal container that was big enough and thick enough like an old beer keg?

It depends on the material the keg is made of. :?:

I think they are made of aluminium so they are more difficult to weld and they have a lower melting point, which makes them distort :(

I also downloaded a copy of the plans which I can e-mail if anyone is interested. Apparently they're not on the site any more.
