We're due some BAD weather so.....?

Is it ok to let my chooks to roost in the nest boxes, where it maybe a bit warmer??

I don't mind the extra poo picking etc, I just want them to be cosy over this predicted 'as bad as last year's' winter  :(

They are fine perching and will squash together. They can get infections from roosting in their own pooh (been there and had this problem with some that wouldn't perch)  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Some have mine have always slept in the nest boxes.  They are ex-batts so I've been a bit indulgent with them when it comes to freedom of choice ::)

Luckily I've not had any problems apart from mucky eggs.  I make sure the whole coop and the nest boxes are very well poo picked every morning so all bedding is clean and fresh, and disinfect regularly.  Even so, can avoid the fact, they are sleeping in poo :(

Hmmmm, slight problem then, I'm out the house for work at 6am, so i think the poo picking bit will be a problem because it's dark when i get in  :(.

Another reason why i asked is, we've had them months now and we're still having to lift them onto the perches at night  :tongue2:, we thought by now they would know what to do!

Hi Goldfinger
Have you tried blocking off the nest boxes? You can use a cardboard box which will also be good insulation & help keep them warm.

Brilliant idea, but, the boxes are really cat litter trays on a shelf. So I'm not sure how I could do it for when they want to lay, (I'll be at work at 'laying time').

On the upside, there's an endless supply of boxes I can get from work.
