The classic gage down here is Rein - Claude De Bavay one word luscious! It is also very productive and I think self fertile.

Greeggages also make an excellent home-made wine. The wine is a wonderful golden colour.

Funny you should post about gages because I want to transform a wild area behind my greenhouse into an orchard with apples, pears, plums and gages etc for eating fresh rather than cooked or for wine, and was wondering if you can eat gages fresh off the tree. As I live up norf and the soil  is silty clay, I think I will contact a reliable seller and see what varieties they suggest.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Goosegirl - you certainly can eat them off the tree. Just get there before the wasps do...

Goosegirl. ive found these guys really helpful www.realenglishfruit.co.uk
Their orchard pack is what ive ordered and its great to know theyve selected varieties that are proven in your general location. their advice is spot on too, i, the same as you have cleared an area behind my main allotment of brambles, shopping trolleys etc and was confused over which varieties/rootstock i would require for the area i had cleared. One phone call to them and i was sorted.
Hope it helps

That's great - thanks! Good to know they will advise on trees that do well in particular situations and will have a look on their site and see what's what.

I have an Oullins Golden Gage tree on my allotment which I can really recommend. The tree looks pretty and very healthy and does not need a lot of care. It takes a while to fruit (I waited several years) but the fruit tastes amazing (very sweet and juicy). The tree seems very hardy as my allotment site can be quite cold and windy, especially in winter.
