Something to grow up a fence
« on: July 16, 2012, 15:49 »
I have an approx 50m long chicken wire fence that I want to grow something up (permanent) so it provides a bit more wind protection.  Any relatively quick growing and preferably edible solutions?  Although I  was thinking of mixing in with some other plants that cover well (such as honeysuckle)

Not sure about all year round wind protection, but currant bushes and autumn raspberries are good in an edible hedge  - sure more ideas will follow  :)

Jerusalem or globe artichokes. They'll both protect you from the weather, but not all year round.

We have a mixed native hedge around our garden containing various thorn bushes - blackthorn, buckthorn, hawthorn etc - and among others dog rose, which gives you rose hips. Be slightly wary of this though, I don't think rose hips from all rose plants are edible. This hedge is a permanent structure which didn't take that long to establish from bare root stock..

You mention honeysuckle, but it is still deciduous and ideally needs pruning back....

Autumn raspberries...  Do you have to cut them down to the ground though for the new growth?   This kind of size would be ideal though so it doesn't too much into the path.  Perhaps some fruit bushes too if I can train them?
