What size pots for toms?
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:56 »
As I got some free toms seeds and have no room for them in my GH bed, what is the best size pot to grow them in? One is Black Russian, the other one - well, I can't remember its name nor can I find the packet but it is a cordon variety.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Just measured mine and they're 12" but anything 10" and about like a flower bucket should be fine, You'll be feeding anyway and whatever you use will probably be bigger than a grown bag  ::)

15 lit minimum i say. Builders buckets are not far off and are about a quid apiece in a certain diy store  Tip: dont buy the orange ones as they are brittle

I got orange ones in 2009 and they are still going strong. I made holes in the bottom and round the bottom of the sides with a soldering iron. :D

Me too.

Thanks for that - I will have some around 12" and will find the deepest ones to plant them in. Good point about Gro-bags though they will allow the tom roots to spread out further than a pot. Anyway, have only just given them their first pot-on so will do that.

10" pots here, and also fifteen toms in a very sunny spot in five planting trays, so a bit smaller than a growbag - and in trays.

As Larders says, you'll be feeding/watering at the same time, so there's not really a problem, as they get to at least five trusses easily on that sort of medium!

I have just contacted D.T.Browns to get the name of the trial tom seeds and will let you know what they are.
