Design and Construction / Depth of raised beds?
« Last post by mumofstig on Today at 20:16 »
Part of my garden, a strip beside the greenhouse, is clay overlaid with a layer of pebbles, like a beach  ::)
I'd like to build a raised bed on top, to grow mostly salad, and wonder what depth of extra soil/compost I could get away with adding? Obviously I'd have to buy in the soil/compost!
I don't know if the pebbles are an advantage with drainage, or if they'll stop any roots from penetrating
Has anybody had similar experience?

A silly tea again since it turned out so warm, but we had soddages as a tray bake with spuds and veg.  It was pretty good even so  :)

Grow Your Own / Re: Slugs (again)

Sorry if this has been touched on, but an article I read recently commented on Highgrove`s gardener suggesting similar to the `beer` method, alternatively using a mixture of small amounts of sugar and dried yeast with water in pots with the rim at ground level.
 Anyone tried this?

Just made so up today so I will keep you posted.

I'd recommend Honeyoye, which I believe is available in the U.S.   Lovely flavour.

And so after me swearing never to have a painted finish kitchen again, I am now re-considering that stance ::)

Only looking at flat fronted door ones though  :tongue2:

Are non-painted kitchens in the same price bracket as a painted one decent doors then. I am assuming hoping it is the cheapest ranges that are dodgy

I don't discriminate - everything  makes me grumpy.

Look on the bright side. At least no-one can accuse you of being inconsistent.

Thank you Cara for doing your daily whack-a-mole.

Sounds like relentless effort has been needed to stop us getting completely swamped.

Need to give the `plank - board` method a name
I think it works better Jan. to March as currently  slugs stay near there `food bank`....in lettuce, among strawberies etc.

Grow Your Own / Re: Copper use on potatoes
« Last post by AnneB on Today at 14:54 »
Dear fellow gardener,

Someone gave me copper to use on my potatoes which I grow in bags. I bought all my varieties from a certified seller and they are doing marvellous, not a mark on them and the first flowers are forming. As they do so well why would I use copper? Is it necessary?
I suspect it might be intended to prevent blight, but I would not use it.   It has been banned for a reason.
