Not really, I'm afraid. You can eat the stalks along with the tops and you can compost the roots. You need to start from scratch again next year.

Well done, broccoli is one of the best superfoods there is, the health benefits are unreal!!  This is my 2nd year growing and my 1st year growing normal broc.  I grew purple sprouting last year and am doing twice the amount of that this year.  Makes me wonder though if my timing's a bit out as mine seems to be suffering and I have no florets on them yet, they look like good stalks and thats about it.  A lot of the leaves look eaten or like they're dying.

the stalks are fabulous sliced thinly and fried with garlic. Honestly - even nicer than the florets.

Are we talking about the small stalks up to the florets, or the large woody inedible stalk that holds the plant up?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My question was really directed at the original poster, I rather think they meant the main stalk as they were also talking about the root.

I use the main stalks too as per my first reply to this or as Jonajo says. They are great stir fried or if you are making a broccoli and stilton soup, they are perfect. :)

Mrs G chops the florets to about 1" of flowers, and stir fries them with crushed garlic and disked baby courgettes...

I forgot to mention the stalks until just afterwards...

Are we talking calabrese here? If so, having harvested the main head leave the plant growing and it will produce secondary(albeit smaller) heads.
