Lethargic and sleepy hen
« on: March 02, 2016, 17:23 »
Hello readers,
Hopefully a small problem but, one of my three hens is a bit lethargic, sleeping most of the time and a bit off her food.
This only happened today and she has laid an egg of her usual size. But I believe it took her a few hours to lay it.
At the moment she is in the conservatory laying down with her eyes closed, no, she's just got up.
Her eyes are bright and no other signs of anything wrong.
It's getting closed to her bed time should I move her to the coop or leave her?

Keep an eye on her and check her vent hasn't prolapsed

How old and what breed is she?
Do they have access to oyster shell all the time?
Do they have access to greens (veg or free range) so they can absorb the calcium?

Hello,
This morning Sue which is a Warren just ove a year old, was up and a bit lively and eating a little and walked out of the conservatory to the garden fairly well, that was 7:30 this morning. Just checked 9am and she's not eating much and again a bit lathargic. She does have access to oyster shell and fairly free range of the garden with green vegetables.
Her vent is a bit dirty looks yellowish, could this be the begging of a prolapsed vent?

An egg might have broken inside and going to the vets will help.
Some people will gently feel inside if there is shell, vasaline on a finger and very gently prob inside the vent. A warm bath might help her to pass anything inside, do this slowly as the shock can kill.
You could do this tonight and keep her inside in a box or something suitable.

Does she or any other hen/cockerel have bubbly eyes or beathing sounds chesty/bubbly?

Did she moult at all this year...how do you know her age...some sellers pass of chickens with the wrong age.

There was no moulting to speak of, but then I presume that's because Sue is still young.
All of the hens eyes are clear and bright.
Good news. Just checked and all three hens including Sue came running to me.
I believe Sue is almost back to her normal self but, will still keep a special eye on her for next two or three days.
Many thanks for your advice and will keep that for the future, just in case. Then I can help her or the other hens sooner.
