Title: Broody hen
Post by: alexroyall85 on July 23, 2017, 16:53
Hi all

I have a broody hen and a spare coop and run. Would it be best to take her out of the main run and coop and put her by herself or give her some company with another couple of hens.

Thanks in advance

Alex

You can either
remove her everytime she goes in the nest box
shut the pop hole...no good if others are laying
make a broody box, wired floor so air can get to her.
some try cold water, but this can kill the bird.

I just remove any eggs, substitute a golf ball and wait it out.

This did backfire once when the hen hid herself under one of the houses and suddenly emerged one day with 10 chicks..........

Do you want her to be broody?

We had a young (half a year old) broody hen a few weeks ago. Tried the 'taking the eggs away from her as soon as they are laid' method - didn't work. She just got angry...
Tried the 'putting her into water for 4 minutes to cool her off' - didn't work.

Then we put her into a dog crate (with wired floor) on some bricks for 2 days and 2 nights, and she was fine afterwards. Started laying again after a week. Just make sure to put a roof on it, food & water, and that she isn't exposed to the elements.
