storing broadbeans
« on: September 02, 2015, 20:03 »
            Hi All

I would like to store my own broadbeans this year, as i've had a healthy and tasty
crop. The problem is I dont know how to go about it. The variety is masterpiece
green longpod. Any suggestions would be warmly recieved. Thanks
keep on digging

I'm sure others will have their own thoughts - but I always freeze mine. I steam them straight from the freezer - a handful at a time - and they are yummy.    8)

I freeze mine too, but I also left some pods in the greenhouse to dry and now have 90 seeds to sow next year.

If they are for eating, then I always freeze them too, but if you want to save the seed for next year to grow your own, then I leave them in the pods til the pods get really dark and dry, then put all the beans on a tray until they are really dry, then put them into a paper bag in my seed container in the shed, they've been fine.

Broad beans freeze well and we always have a special tub especially for Christmas lunch.
We just put them into the big red celebration sweet tubs in the freezer, straight after picking, no blanching.
Mind mine have been in there for well over a month already. Just grab a handful from the freezer and steam. No boiling!
For seed saving, we just leave some pods to turn brown and then pick out the beans and let them dry out in the greenhouse for a few weeks. They are now all dry and in an envelope ready for sowing next spring.

Thanks everyone for your help. I should have made it clearer that I meant to store as
seed, but great advice as always.I have quite a few rusty looking pods already so
I'll let them get on with it. Once again, many, many thanks.
