Love those chooks but......
« on: October 26, 2010, 23:09 »
Since getting the girls 18 months ago my garden has (on the whole) burgeoned due to their scratching up of weeds, lovely manure, brilliant slug/snail hunting abilities and pecking of some plants which causes them to grow stronger!! They also de-bug the raised beds for me after cropping, scarify the lawn and they even give me a regular supply of eggs!
I have learned which plants are suitable to grow and I make sure the root structure is well established before planting out. I've got more shrubs than I used to!
What does make me ponder is their liking for foxgloves. They razed them to the ground last year with no obvious side effects and have started on them again this year. I thought all parts of foxglove were toxic.....
It's not lack of greens because they have various leaves that I grow.

Hi,

This discussion took place in here previously:

It might be prudent to keep the chickens and foxgloves segregated just to be safe. ::)

My hens destroyed a foxglove during one of their extended free ranges (escapes ) so i decided they were not safe to grow. The thought of digitalis tainted (even tiny amounts) eggs being eaten by a family member with heart problems was not acceptable.

Thanks Argyllie.....I'm not going to worry too much. They peck at rhubarb as well with no bad effects and obviously no long term effects as they've done it before.
Perhaps there are times during the year when the toxicity is higher or perhaps chickens aren't humans!!! They certainly seem to know what's ok....they're still alive!!
My foxgloves have not been eaten manically....more scratched to shreds and covered with earth so they SEEM to have disappeared!

A new one for me yesterday when having a tidy up in the garden, speckeldy had her head in the clippings bucket eating the dog rose hips whole.

Thinking of schoolboy antics with itching powder makes you realise how tough the hens digestive system is.

When you see some of the slugs or mice and lizards that they eat, yes!  :tongue2:
