Tomato - Cherry Baby
« on: July 18, 2022, 08:29 »
I'm trying a new (to me) variety of cherry tomato this year. True to the write up they seem to be a prolific cropper. Whilst not obvious in the photo of the outdoor plant, there are currently 76 fruit/flowers on the one truss. The indoor ones hit the top of the greenhouse a while ago and are being trained horizontally. I started harvesting them on 20th June.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They look fantastic, are they sweet tasting or is there any acidity in the mix? (I like some acidity in my toms ;))

Yes they do have a bit of a tang. Granddaughter loves them and that's where most have ended up!

That's a fabulous crop, especially with training them across the roof!

Do you think that this year, the extra warmth has helped some varieties, (small toms), as opposed to bigger ones like Shirley?

Hard to say. My usual cherry tomato is Black Cherry and they always seem to go rampant. This year is no exception. As usual height-wise they were streets ahead of the larger varities which plodded along at their usual rate.

As - ahem - tomorrow is one of 'those' days, Mrs Growster asked me what we should be having for lunch, and I've been counting the various toms we have which have ripened around 'The Turrets'. I've got to around nine or ten!

In previous years, the 'Sungold' always came out of the trap first, sometimes in the first week of July, but this year, it will be a Bruschetta made from 'Cocktail Crush' and 'Shirley'...

...and a few slurps of a fave Californian white wine - 'Barefoot Chardonnay'!
