Discussed quite recently in a "leek" thread, from this post onwards:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have tried snipping and not snipping side by side. No difference in the final crop.

Some say giving the roots a haircut helps put the leeks in their dibbed holes, but that's all there is to it.
I don't understand how one can trim the tops of the plants if one wants to plant the leeks deeply... they would disappear... I plant my leeks out as soon as they and the weather appear suited, and and often don't have the height to be snipping them.
I do cut off the tops before I cook them though  :)

Research in Belgium has shown that you should not trim.

I'm in the don't trim camp. No scientific basis for my vote other than as Growers we strive for good root & leaf growth. So why when we have got that  would we cut off what we have strived for.
