Can someone post which makes you would recommend, its on my Christmas list along with the super duper chicken house I found last weekend, Looking at the price of the house I am more likely to get a bread maker.

He has to beat last year and I was thrilled last year when I got my pink hoover called Hetty  :D

I've got a Kenwood Rapid-Bake and it's great.  I found that I had several failures at first.  They were more like house bricks. :roll:  But it's great now and I can experiment without fear of failure.

hi d-b,  it's the basic loaf plus 1-2oz sun dried toms added at the
 beeping time.
for the cheese & onion, again basic white with half an onion chopped
very fine, i put it in micro to soften, and 1and half oz parmesan cheese
again added at the beep.
another one is half white flour and half whole-meal with grains then i add a hand-ful of sunflower seeds and a smaller amount of linseed.
they say bread making has to be exact but thats not me....they turn out ok tho!!!
my machine is a morphy richards

I like machines for day to day bread but when time permits I like to make bread by hand. I am currently exploring a book called "The handmade Loaf" by Dan Lepard which has some fantastic recipes, OH is enjoying testing the results. I'm trying to find breads that I can eat, therefore wheat free and am trying to perfect a rye bread that I like rather than tolerate.

My Breadmaker is my pride and joy, I just wish more people sold the mix!

My favourite is cheese and onion, my partners fave is good old White Loaf.

I was going to try some bread rolls, where you get the Bread Maker to make your dough then you bake them in the oven! At least that way I can make small ones for my little 'un and BIG ones for OH!!

Mine's a Panasonic 255. I made a medium white with dark crust overnight - even though I put it in when I came in from the pub. Took a while to set the timer though...

My husband is the bread maker in our house and he loves his breadmaker.

He's designed his own recipe for Cranberry and Rosemary bread which is wonderful - especially with soup in the winter and at Christmas.

Have a go at making it:-

One cup of cranberries, halved or quartered (fresh better than dried, but if they have to be dried avoid sugary ones!)
1 cup of cranberry juice
2.5 tablespoons of olive oil (or other oil or butter)
1.25 teaspoons of salt
2.25 tablespoons of sugar
2.5 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder – optional
2 teaspoons of dried rosemary (or fresh, if you have it!)
3 cups of strong white bread flour
1.25 teaspoons of dried yeast

Makes a 1.5lb loaf - follow instructions on your breadmaker

I'm off to try that one, it sounds lovely. I have had my Morphy Richards fastbake for approx 2 months and had a few problems to start off with but I now have the hang of it.  I have a book called "The bread book"  by Sara Lewis. It's got loads of different recipes suitable for machine or by hand including doughnuts and naam bread. Yum Yum

Making bread by hand is a great way to get dirty hands clean. :wink:

Mine does leave a hole but it is fairly small.

you need one with plenty of bread settings on them, the cheap ones with only basic settings are not that good, the more styles of bread you can make the better.

Title: What Breadmaker
Post by: Chezjoie on October 04, 2008, 08:46
I'm on my 2nd breadmaker ... I wore the first one out!  Both have been Russell Hobbs.   I was so impressed with the first one, I just didn't want another make.  As well as its performance, the RH is the only one I knew which didn't need the sachets of fast-acting yeast.  The drums of Allisons work fine and last for ages - a big saving as the sachets are expensive.

I find I get the best results when I use the timer.  I frequently just use the machine to make the dough and take it out after it has had its first prove.  That way I can shape it, make rolls, or anything else we fancy.  Our favourite is to roll it flat, cover it in garlic butter, and prove and bake it.

Try to reduce the salt, pretty sure you would of guessed that anyway but it does need it for the baking process, my fave is a french style, takes longer to bake (4hrs) but it reduced in salt and oil.

This is mine:
(http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/App_Themes/MorphyRichards/Images/Products/48280-Hero.jpg)

As yet I have only made bread using bread mixes from supermarkets, I have not been brave enough to try any recipes from cupboard items!

This is also my 2nd breadmaker, the first one died a slow death and wasn't cooking the bread right through, even on the longest setting so it went to Breadheaven!

Mine is Morphy Richards too! i put a link on my other post, its been really good so far, had mine since Feb this year. Really easy to clean. All I would suggest is to get one with as many settings as possible, and make sure it has a timer so you can set it to bake over night when its cheap rate.

No problem, I dont know about Riala's but with mine it will make jams, doughs, cakes all sorts and of course bread. I normally make a 1.5lbs loaf which does us 4 for the day.

I have absolutely no experience with bread making but
Just out of interest, roughly,how much does that cost you? (in ingredients only)

I pay 75p for a bag of readymix that I just add water too (and olive oil if its Ciabatta), that makes 2lb loaf, or enough for 2 large Biabatta loafs.

Mine has:

    * 2 loaf sizes
    * Fastbake setting
    * Choice of 12 settings
    * 13 hour programmable timer
    * 3 crust settings

    * Cool touch sides
    * Includes measuring cup and spoon
    * Recipe/instruction book
    * 600 watt

Fastbake Cooltouch Breadmaker

The smell of baking bread is a delight to the senses and now with the Morphy Richards Fastbake Cooltouch breadmaker, baking your own bread is not only easy - it is also very quick. Simply place all the ingredients in the non stick bread pan and the breadmaker will automatically mix, knead, prove and bake the loaf in 80 minutes.

I worked out that a 1.5 lbs loaf, including electric was about 52p a loaf. This was based on prices at the cheap rate off peak. Yes you could buy cheaper, but thats not bread, its stodgy junk.

I assume that as we have the same manufacturer, the recipes would be the same. Have you tried the french style bread? Really nice, we make this all the time.

If its a home made recipe, then no.

I scour the supermarkets for the hard to find bread mixes like these ones:

i must admit I coule not find any ready mix's. I also had no instruction book, but the joys of the Murphy richards website I printed one off and there are all the reciepies!

So I make my own following what they say and so far they have all been good (apart from my first due to a reading error!).

I would not worry about getting ready mix as it just takes 5 mins more. However what we have decided to do is bag and seal our own mix so we can do it quickly!

Nope, it should be in your recipe book that came with your BM, if not download it from their site, its straight forward to make, as easy as the ready made mixes and is really light, with a crusty crust.

The bread mixes tend to have added E numbers and are expensive so I avoid them.

Decided to learn to make bread this winter, entered village show and won 2nd prize, was really proud of loaf never mind prize and now I bake 3 or 4 loaves a week.  will bore you with my fav recipe

sieve into large bowl
650 grams strong white flour
350 grams multgrain flour
add
nice slash olive oil
2 tsp sea salt
1 egg

let it warm up

put
575 ml hand hot water
nice slash runny honey
3 tsp easy yeast
in jug and stir  will be really frothy in 5 - 10 mins

add liquid to bowl, stir in, turn out dough and kneed 10 mins,  shouldnt add loads of flour for kneeding, split between 2 oiled loaf tins, cover with oiled cling film, leave about 40 mins warm place, knock back and kneed again 4 mins, put back in tins, let rise again in warm place for about 1hr, bake hot oven (mines an aga) 25 mins take out of tins and put back in oven extra 5 mins to crisp up.  takes further 5 mins to eat! lovely yum yum
