clerestory roof for shed
« on: May 07, 2012, 22:49 »
Hi,
My plot is shaded by a big  thicket of blackthorn that will be taken down to 7ft this autumn. Tje thicket will still cast a lot of shade. To help get light into my prospective shed I was thinking of putting a clerestory roof on.

Has anyone else done this, and if you have, do you have any pointers?

Thanks!

No I haven't seen that but with sheds anything is possible.  Have you drawn up any idea of how you will tackle it  :)

One way to do it Surbie, is to replace a couple of sheets of tin on the roof (assuming it is tin you're using), with translucent sheets.

We ran out of tin, which we'd scrounged and collected over the years, and I had about 6 sq. ft to go, so we popped a sheet up there instead, and it really does help to light the interior!

Ask for it to be cut a bit more.
Make sure you can get completely around the shed with a ladder so you can clean the roof. You might want to use unscrewable screws to stop unwanted getting in.

Somewhere around and about at home I have a skylight from a caravan.
It could be just what you need and would fix in with very little mucking about, a little sealant and an instant, opening light that's too small to let toe-rags in.
I'll have a look for it if you're interested (but not until I can kneel on the floor without getting wet legs from the rain!)

ooooooooooooooh!! Thank you, sounds v interesting! I've been drawing up plans with OH for the clerestory roof and trying to get the roof ehight to comply with the site's Shed Rules. He's cleared the ground and we just need to get the timber calculated. As soon as we have any proper progress there will be photos.
