prolapse
« on: February 26, 2009, 19:26 »
hello everyone. had a problem with one of my gals today. i picked her up and a yolk came out and what looked like a prolapse. within half an hour it had gone back in with no sign of anything. i cleaned her and couldn`t see anything untoward going on. i`ve separated her from the others for the night.
any suggestions and advice much appreciated.

I hope someone can offer good advice.......sounds very unpleasant!

Unfortunately I haven't a clue. :(

Was there any sign of the shell?

no, there wasn`t any sign of a shell. never come across this prob before so i`m quite worried. she seems fine, but i`m concerned the shell might be still inside and causing mischief!

That's what I was worried about :(

Do you have a poultry friendly vet locally?
Might be best to get her checked out.

Firstly, I know nothing!

but...is she getting enough calcium? Maybe the shell just hasn't formed? or super soft!? just a thought....

Good thought MW :)

It is possible I suppose, especially if she'd had a fright during laying.

thanks folks. i`m a chef and so they get a regular oyster shell supply!, plus woods to roam in where i`m sure they get lots of grit & supplies. the only thing that was different was i clipped her wing just before and i`m wondering if it scared her as she was about to lay? she`s never been concerned with clipping before and is used to being handled.

i saw an old chap in the village who used to keep chooks and he said put pile cream on her! lol! think it`ll be a vet visit tommorow.

I didn't think of lack of calcium for shell formation.... it's a thought.

I bred foreign finches, budgies and parakets years ago. Can't ever recall a hen producing an egg with no shell but there was the, once in a while, verythin (almost papery) shell.

If all else seems fine... maybe an increase in grit might put things right?

The pile cream would be ok if the hen was still prolapsed, but as it's gone back in then I wouldn't bother with it :)

Welcome to the Hen House by the way :D

phew! glad about the cream..didn`t fancy applying that!

someone told me it might be that the egg was very big and so causes the cloaca(?) to come out. at least it went back on its own.
