Poor Penny an elderly ex batt prolapsed yesterday. Tried to re-insert it but back out again today with lots of blood...what a mess. I did what I think was the best thing and dispatched her but am now concerned that maybe I should have given her another chance! She must have been about 4 years old. Suppose I am just asking for re=assurance really !! :(

Lots of reassurance from me! 4 years is a good age for an ex batt, so know that you gave her a lovely 'proper' life for so long. Sometimes prolapses can be sorted, but they often do more internal damage than we know, and often return.
I've only had 1 or 2 hens prolapse, but if sorted, but then it returns, we usually cull them to put them out of their misery.
I think you did the right thing! :)

I agree with Grannie Annie here. She had a good long run for an ex-batt.

Absolutely agree. We had one with the same condition last week, and I was the one that said we should try everything to give her another chance. 3 days later it happened again and we did have to dispatch her as she was in a right state.
With hindsight I should have saved her the suffering.
You did the right thing. But it's not nice is it?

as an ex batt her muscles would have been weakened so yes you did the right thing.
The ones where it is more successfull is when the chicken is young and often just coming into lay.

You really did do the right thing - and you gave her a second chance. If there was a lot of blood perhaps the other chickens had pecked her in which case you probably wouldn't have been able to save her. We had this happen to one of our POL's just a couple of weeks after we collected them, and we didn't have a clue what was happening so she suffered needlessly, albeit only for an hour until we googled what was happening, and put her out of her misery.
