Savoy Cabbage Harvesting

Good Morning, our crop of savoy cabbages are about ready for harvest.  My question is this, to avoid a glut, can some be left in the ground, or is it best to left and then blanch what we are not using straight away?  Many thanks.

They should stand in the ground for a few weeks, but eventually they will start splitting - so keep an eye on them.

And watch out for mollusc damage too, as slugs can work their way inside

 If they are well hearted now you probably planted them a bit early (or this daft Summer has brought them on too fast)

By all means start using them now if they are hearted and you have plenty. Their great value is that they will stand right through the Winter.

All the brassicas have come along too fast .... Sigh.  Might be a good thing since the beans are giving up too fast too...

Last year I found some of ours split when we got a lot of rain after a dryish spell, so I took them up and hung some in the garage in the cool, by the stem. They lasted ages
