I know the secret of large pumpkins, it's in the genes. ;)
-
My nine year old will join you if thats ok. If she wins you can just claim that she wasn't actually a member and therefore forfeits the challenge. ;)

'course you need rules!!! ::)
How about:
- you must grow it yourself - not buy it
- it must be a pumpkin not something else in costume
How might you decide who wins? By weight or by girth?
You could have two sections and choose which to enter your mammoth growths into later! ;)
-

i didn't think of that :(
i like those rules :)

'course you need rules!!! ....calm down, you've retired now ::)
How about:
you must grow it yourself - not buy it.....obviously, goes without saying
it must be a pumpkin not something else in costume...... ditto above
How might you decide who wins? By weight or by girth?
You could have two sections and choose which to enter your mammoth growths into later! so largest as in origional thread..(measure) or weigh devisions proof in a photo ?
sorted
-
The only rule is the winner is the winner.
We can't weigh them so it will have to be girth with a photo of the tape measure around it.
Aunty will know if you've cheated ;)
-
I'm growing them this year on my first attempt (4 are up and growing in the greenhouse, and I'll put them in next week), yea so I'll join in the fun :D. I've bought Mammoth pumpkin - supposed to grow to 70lb, but lets see shall we? I'm not fussy on pumpkins, but if it does grow that big, I'll be donating it to the Childrens Hospital in Pendlebury in Salford :D for Halloween
-
ill have a go never grown anything before but will give it a go on my new plot! nothin like jumpin in at the deep end! ha! rite then off to buy some seeds!
-
So... who's a clever Aunty?
Can the whole of this thread be magically transferred over to the competitions section??
More people might notice it there...or do we have to wait for the photo competition to finish first?
Just an interfering thought!
-
ok its sorted then.
everyone takes a picture of there pumpkin with a tape measure next to it, the biggest one wins.
the winner will have pumpkin champion under there name :)
simples!! :tongue2:
-
Could you add me too please? I've only ever grown them once and I did manage to get a Halloween sized one. The plant itself decided to go for a wander all round the allotment site so if there's ever a competition for longest plant I reckon I'd be onto a winner .
-
Seeds are in, feed program worked out Go! seeds GO!
GT
-
Just as a matter of interest: Is it possible to shrink cloth tape measures?
-
Blast, I bought a small pumpkin variety... so I might have shot myself in the foot already. I'll watch from the sidelines ::)
Im with you on that one
You bring the tea and ill bring the biscuits

-
i got given two pumpkin seeds over a week ago and i put them in the propagator and one has popped its head out on saturday so i put it in the greenhouse without cover and its doing fine so just waiting for the other to germinate , just growing them for a bit of fun really. :)
-
Planted 6 seeds as I am always pessimistic 16 days ago now not a sign of anything is that OK in a cool greenhouse >:(
-
I think they need somewhere warmer. I'm putting mine on a window sill with a plastic bag over them.
-
Can I join too please?
If the pumpkins survive the wireworms they might be OK -- I am growing Jack o'Lantern and Ironbark, neither massive ones I think but quite big will do me ;)
-
sunshineband, your on the list :)
nilsatis1964 and tontom would you like me to put your names on the list ?
-
I'm growing "Atlantic Giant" and I have a secret recipe, mwaaaaaaahahaha
-
OK I give in
But I'll stick with it -- you never know.... is it too late to start big ones off btw

-

-
Count me in although being in in Scotland the cold might not be too conducive. My variety will be Atlantic Giant ( we will see if it lives up too its name). The seed packet has a picture of a toddler sitting on a pumpkin.
-
Count me in too please!
I've got two Atlantic Giant's potted on in the greenhouse :)
-
My 3 year old son and I would like to play please :D.
I usually grow small varieties, but this year we've sown some freebie seeds from the National Trust, which look as if they might a larger variety (although no such info on the packet ???).
-
I'll play too! Don't think I'll be too much competition for you all - is there a prize for the smallest pumpkin??!
-
I've some spare Atlantic Giant seeds if anyone would like some.
-
could i be included please? worth a shot planted my seeds today :D
-
I'll play too! Don't think I'll be too much competition for you all - is there a prize for the smallest pumpkin??!
Sorry I think I'll probably be claiming that! Now wishing I'd bought Atlantic Giant instead of Connecticut Field... but hey does anywhere in the rules say how many times the tape measure goes round the pumpkin 8)
-
Hurry, hurry hurry, get your Atlantic Giant seeds here. Two seeds for the fantabulous price of nothing, yes, that's right, NOTHING. Limited supply available, get them while you can. (While I'm in a good mood).
-
Thank you in advance :D

That's very generous thank you - but I'm going to stick with my little pumpkins this year for the kids to carve, and maybe next year attempt a record breaker.... (or not).
-
I'll have a go though never grown one before. When is the closing date for the Comp?

Oh, my gosh!planted out my pumpkins a few days ago and they didn't look as well as they should do after being in a few days.On further inspection ,seems some ants have been eating through the stems! does anyone else have this problem?I don't think they'll survive so I'm going to start some more off.

-
Compo likes to grow them big! I'll give it a grow.........sorry, go :nowink:

I accept your challenge. Pumpkin seeds at dawn it is.

most of mine got too cold in the conservatory last week in the frosts..
I now have 1 big max and 1 neon f1 for the competition...
have i still got time to sow more ?
-
Bung'em in and see ;)
-
Count me in never grown them before but a friend says she will cook a pumpkin curry if we get a decent size one. I have sowed 6 seeds to have germinated waiting for the others. Are they difficult to grow or is it just put thm in and watch them grow?
-
planted f0ur
a week ago and they went nuts so they are all buried up to the first two leaves in ten inch pots all i did was stick em in cells on the kitchen window and bang
jack o laterns is what i planted and i have my pallets ready and also have put them out in the cold frame to cool em down lol
-

Pretty easy to grow them. Dig a big hole, put in some well rotted manure, put the soil back over the manure, plant pumpkin in the middle and water regularly (use a submerged bottle to help get the water down to the roots) – weed suppressant liner also helps as it gives extra heat. You can plant straight in the ground, but they will grow better this way.
Anybody else got tips/ secrets they want to share on how to grow them big?
Would add that IMHO the bigger varieties usually have less taste/ more watery, so if you can, then plant a few smaller varieties for cooking – winter super sweet is my favourite, but there are many others.

My "Atlantic Giant" pumpkin is now three metres tall and the fruit is approximately quarter of a ton. You all have no chance. 8)
Psych.
-
i dont exagerate!!!!
but in my heated 5star poly tunnel, they are already in flower!!!
if i put a paving stone on top off them, will they squash and have a bigger girth hhmmmmmmmm???
-
i started with 4 pumpkin plants, now i have only one. and it don't look to great ether :(
-
am i in comp in time blackcap????
-
sure you are :) your on the list
i think i may have to sow another lot of pumpkins :(
-
I just have! ::)
-
my first 3 are also down to 1.. growing very slowly but very fat seed leaves! I put another 2 in yesterday so fingers crossed ::)
-
2 out of 3 look fried in todays heat :( Might sow a couple of backups ???
-
While all the tending and then all the growin is going on followed by the waiting....
......had anyone thought of what they will do with these mammoth monsters once harvest time arrives?
Perhaps you might get some ideas together while the growing is going on? ;)
-
I put my main pumpkin plant (1 main leaf and 2 seed leaves only but massive already!) into a nice big container today.. Filled with 3/4 rotted manure and compost.. Hope it likes that :)
Hoping to get it planted on the allotment after the first early potatos are up.. after the leeks haha ::)

Just noticed this post.
I grew this variety last year. They only grow to a modest size and are intended to be a Hallowen size carving pumpkin. If you want to stand a chance of winning, you may have to have a re-think.
-

Psych.
I heard that Ice has cleared a space on the matlepiece for the trophy
-
Well it sounds as though the pumpkin's already too big to fit on the mantlepiece, so it'll have to be the trophy instead :D
-
It's mine, mine I tells ya. Mwahahaha. (http://bestsmileys.com/tropheys/3.gif)
-
Warning:
Those who stand tall have the furthest to fall :(
Sorry Ice but someone had to say it ;)
-
It's shredded to pieces. Something, (or someone), has torn it apart. (http://bestsmileys.com/crying/2.gif)
Luckily, I have three others down in the crypt. ;)
Tonight I will have land mines, an electric fence and overnight armed sentry duty. (http://bestsmileys.com/shooting1/12.gif)

Although a kindly soul sent me some Atlantic Giant seeds, (Ta muchly :D ) due to family circumstance I haven't been abe to sow them. :( :(
.. so I have jack o' lantern too :(
But at least Ice will have a chance  assuming she can reclaim a plant form her crypt of course ;)
-
Our luvverly MumofStig sent me some seeds - and yup, I did the; planting without writing label' first trick. So if mine are great then its all down to her (well some of it is anyway - the free slops from the pub will help)
-
You should all be afraid, be very afraid.
-
I wonder if slops will help my JoLs grow big and strong?
-
Something I read yonks ago - slops (half a pint a day) and manure and lots of water will get big pumpkins. Im guessing you need the big pumpkin seed first though
Its cant hurt anyway
-
My seeds were about 3/4 in long --- is this big enough d'you think ;)
-
Mine were about the same - slightly bigger possibly
Give it a go! I am
-
   Bit late to plant them now isn't it ?
-
My unopened packet of ones that Harry bought says May - so I reckon theres time
-
Aha
LOOK OUT ICE here I come
-
Be afraid Ice, be very afraid :D
-
A pumpkin pincer movement is underway
-
Hoping a lot of manure will help mine! Only have the 1 'big' pumpkin growing now but its massive already and only has 1 true leaf so far!
bring it on :tongue2:
-
Game on.
-
Can you count me in. I'm a bit late, so no doubt every one is way ahead of me, but I've just remembered the McMillan charity pumpkin seed I got off lacewing earlier this year.
-
sure DD :)
-
Thanks.
If they don't germinate, at least I can blame someone else!
-
Thanks.
If they don't germinate, at least I can blame someone else!
I heard that dropping them in boiling water for ten minutes stimulates even the most reluctant seed to germinate. ;)

ice, are you trying to make DD's seeds not germinate ?

She's not catching me out with that one again! >:(

I've Big Max And Atlantic Giant on the go. And some spares as well.
John's advice worked well last year. Bigger hole and more manure this time.
Bring it on.
78 lbs last year and I cut it way too early.

Gardener's World Episode 11 (BBCi Player) mentions pumpkin seeds.... a packet of 2 seeds for £10
It seems they were from a Giant Pacific and a prize winner / record sized fruit.... so, peeps, this competition could lead to greater things!!
The best of luck to you all ;)
-
put me on the list, i have one growing from a seed i got of an ebay listing of a member here, cant remember who it was, but the plant is looking ok after an initial brush with frost
-
your both on the list ;)
-
Any pics allowed to see how everyones going on?
-
anyone is allowed to post pics if they want :)

Somewhere deep in the woods, at the back of beyond and surrounded by land mines lies this magnificent plant. Be afraid, be very afraid, mwahahaha.

-
My "Atlantic Giant" pumpkin is now three metres tall and the fruit is approximately quarter of a ton. You all have no chance. 8)
Psych.
You know, in the picture I think it looks smaller? ;)
-
i 'll haver a go ,my 2nd year of growing them

Odd looking fruit Ice. ???
It seems to grow very upright and come ready labelled!
-
Why the netting Ice?
-
The first one got pecked to pieces by something and ten minutes after I replanted, this one also had beak marks in ther leaves. ::) Still, they havn't triggered the land mines yet. :)
-
Hmmmm thats food for thought. Out of 3 sowed I really only have one that is doing well so cant afford to lose it. Just put it in the ground so might net it. Better safe than sorry :D
-
how many units off beer a day are they allowed???????
should i ask defra or the n.h.s. ?????????????????
-
how many units off beer a day are they allowed???????
Only giving yours beer then? That's a bit of a risk. :tongue2:

gets a G+T every other day lol, :D :D :D :)
Carry on. Just ignore that it's a scientific fact that Gin and Tonic stunts growth in pumpkins. 8)
-
hey!!!!! nature always beats science,lol,
any one lend me a real big tape measure for the day!!!!!!!!!
-
any one lend me a real big tape measure for the day!!!!!!!!!
Is that one of those elastic ones? :tongue2:
-
please may we be added to the list? My son & I planted our first ever pumpkin plant today
-
sure thing :)

At this rate there'll be a pumpkin explosion all over the place

mines bigger than that lol.. although its still in a big container and wont have a place to live until the potatos are up. Im surprised how massive the leaves are!!
-
I'd like to say that my seed have finally emerged.
I'd like to, but my honesty forbids it. :(
-
mines bigger than that lol
So is mine now. ;)
-
DD..isn't honesty just awful sometimes? :)
Sigh, mine is actually about three times that...but its not going to produce pumpkin that will win this contest. A relatively moderate sized variety. Certainly not going to be enough to compete against this crowd.
I'm expecting some serious pumpkin photos in the months to come.
-
Still no show. :(
-
Still no show. :(
Would you like me to post you an Atlantic Giant plant?
-
yes please :D

yes please :D
I do have two spares growing nicely.

-
oh i thought you meant pictures
I was being magnanimous.
-
I'm in, are we doing a specific seed or what we get hold of?
-
:tongue2:better add my name then as I`m having a go with `griffs` seeds!
-
anyone heard off success growing this way?
plant in the greenhouse border, lift a glass slightly and let it run out
-
I'm in, are we doing a specific seed or what we get hold of?
what ever seeds you want as long as its a pumpkin :)
i've added you both to the list
-
count me in please. Planted 3 out earlier this week - cant remember variety.
-
sure :)
-
Is it too late for me to join in - and doe sit count if I have bought the plant as a two-leafer? Or do I need to go and get some seeds and start from scratch?
-
its not to late to join in and you can if you want enter the two leafer :)
so should i add you to the list ?
-
Thank you - yes please, add me to the list :)
-
done :)
-
Who is organising the independent verifiers when it comes to judging the final winner/s?
I'm not offering, mind as it could be a very long cycle all over the place, I just wondered how the outcomes were to be judged?
There would be so many ways to fiddle the result if it was just down to a tape-measure and a posted photo!! (Some people have devious minds! Not me of course!)
-
no idea
-
no idea
Tape measure and photo then, eh? ;)
(No fingers at the back of the pumpkin to swell the diameter and no slack in the tape.) ::)
-
Can we play too please?
We started from seed back in March, never done it before though lol
-
Add me to the list i am trying giant atlantic ...i think they are called.
Last year all Pumpkins got as big as a grapefruit and at the same time seemed to be cut away from main stem so hoping this year they last longer than 1st week of August!
-
your both added :)
-
no idea
Tape measure and photo then, eh? ;)
(No fingers at the back of the pumpkin to swell the diameter and no slack in the tape.) ::)
LOL - Learner is obviously an old hand at this ;)
-
I'm sending everyone on the list an elastic tape. Just stretch it as far as you can when measuring your pumpkin. ;)
-
no idea
Tape measure and photo then, eh? ;)
(No fingers at the back of the pumpkin to swell the diameter and no slack in the tape.) ::)
LOL - Learner is obviously an old hand at this ;)
That's the ticket.... when measuring keep your hand on the back of the pumpkin and run the tape measure round and over your hand while the other hand holds the ends together round the front for the photo ;)
This of course is banned!!!!
(PS You need big hands... I wonder if it'd work with your foot?)
-
I'd love to enter, but as I'm only growing some Jack O' Lanterns that came free with a magazine apparently I'm unlikely to win. You never know though - I've had HUGE successes with BNS in the past (and that's probably just blown this year's crop...)
I'd also love to see what this competition does to the price of pumpkins in the supermarkets. The way they get away with charging so much for such inferior products just because it's Hallowe'en is beyond me - and I bet the growers don't get inflated payments either.
Sorry, rant over, but I'm certainly going to be giving away my surplus to families who would normally buy one and carve it for Hallowe'en, although obviously not my competition winning one. :tongue2:
-
Jack O'Lanterns don't grow extra large.
They are recommended for Hallowen carving squash.
-
Yeah, I'd read that earlier on in the thread and appreciated I was unlikely to win, but I've always been an optimist...
-
... and I have a REALLY stretchy tape measure.
-
They don't grow huge, but crop well. This is what we got off 3 plants last year:
-
Good grief. OK, I'll consider that my own personal challenge. ??? It just so happens I have 3 plants settling in nicely...
-
My heaven's DD, that is impressive!!!
Perhaps you should expand your title to "Pea AND Pumpkin God".
-
Actually, they grew on Mrs Digger's plot.
-
For a little inspiration and an amazing sight I would recommend a visit to Slindon in West Sussex - there's a pumpkin farm - an amazing place ;)
Not the largest but an interesting range and sight: Pumpkin Festival (http://www.chichester.co.uk/gallery/GALLERY-Slindon-Pumpkin-Festival-attracts.5713296.jp)

your on the list :)
-
checked my pumpkins this evening and very very happy to see a tiny little pumpkin growing on 1 of the 2 neon f1 i have planted.. They are in (far too small) pots in the garden at the minute but will hopefully get moved to the allotment in the next few weeks when the early potatos are all up. Im hoping to at least get a decent one for a halloween lantern!
My 2 big max plants (for the competition :tongue2:) are doing ok but no signs of any fruit. 1 is still small on the bedroom windowsill and the other has massive leaves and is in a container full of muck. Its doing really well but has real issues standing up and seems to wilt in the sun even though it has damp manure and fall over breaking leaves in the wind.. ah well :)
-
Can i play too? :) I managed to mix up my planting (in my newbiness!) and seem to now have 7 pumpkin plants at the lottie now all flowering and bearing little tiny fruits! wooooo... Good job Halloween is my favourite festival and i like pumpkin soup :D
-
i've just added you to the list :)
-
is it to late to join the gang I can take some pics for you
-
well I'm out.........the only plant I had for a big pumpkin..............has gone to heaven along with his cucumber cousins. :tongue2:
Sad but true :(
-
What happened mum?
-
Just the weather I think Ice....cool and very windy last week on the allotment and now very hot..never mind. I still have some other pumpkins and butternuts in the garden( a bit more sheltered), just not another big fruiting one :(
-
I'm surprised that the weather killed them. Oh well, never mind, you didn't stand a chance anyway.
Not that I'm confident of winning or anything.
-
Pride goes before a fall and all that Ice :nowink:
or are you going round nobbling all our pumpkins, just to make sure

No where near as good as the last pic but here are my 2 (of my 3) girls :)
The little one and another slightly bigger (with a teeny pumpkin showing!) will be planted at the allotment tomorrow.. hoping to get a few for halloween with that one!
The larger is a big max.. im not going to have room for it at the allotment for another couple of weeks at least  Not sure how im going to get it there as it should be a bit bigger by then! May see if i can borrow the neighbours van for half an hour! ;)
EDIT *** In case your wondering thats a small yellow plastic ball in the pic and not a pumpkin!! I wish! No fruit showing on there yet but cant even see the flowers due to the leaves!! ***
-
look good and healthy ,try to wrap them in cling film just to support them for the move and compress them a little

Thankyou I will try that!
Wondering now if i should take the big one there while i can still (probably) get it in the car.. I like having it here though so I can keep an eye on it lol :)
-
By the way, I'm only pulling Philskin's leg as his pumpkin is bigger than mine. But, it is well to remember the story of the hare and the tortoise. 8)

Ok. How about next weekend? I'm at a bit of a loose end. 8)
-
Hey all! One of mine has a fruit on it the size of a small hand but is touching the soil; is it best to put something underneath it- worried about pests and it rotting if the soil is wet?
:)

i'm putting a pallet under mine to make it easier to get off the plot!!!! :D :D
Seriously a bit off board, slate, even straw

Beats me hands down prize is all yours ice a years supply of Guiness
-
Who said anything about a year's supply of Guinness
Now if I'd read about that a while back I would be entered, competing and keeping secrets (where it's planted, what it's fed on, how fast it's growing....) and aiming to win!
A year's supply of my fourth favouritest drink (after coffee, strong tea and single malt).
That's nearly 8 pints of Guinness by my reckoning!!
-
I did mention that guiness is my dog didnt i

Lots of faith there. Should you keep two - one as a back-up just in case?
-
mine arent doing well, fingers crossed they take off
-
my son ran over my big pumpkin plant in his little motorbike today.. I guess it wont be getting any bigger! I just hope some of the flowers get pollinated!
-
Mm, mine is setting fruit, but I'm beginning to suspect that it might be a fraud :(.
It was from seeds given away as freebies from the National Trust last year (just handed out). Did anyone else get any and, if so, any idea what variety they are. They were labelled as 'pumpkin' and the plant is huge and trailing. The fruits are round and green with light stripes on them.
A long shot, but any ideas ?
-
Mine just set 1st fruit this week, exciting :nowink: :nowink:
So what is anyone going to with it if they get a big one???????????
Last year i sent my 1st+only 90lb+ one to a school for very very sick children, apparently they loved it and the photos and drawings they sent to me, can only say priceleess!!!!!!!!!
Beat that barclay card :) :D   :) :D
-
Oh dear.... I was pleased with my 20.600kg one last night :(
Pamela
-
I'll join in please! hoping for a whopper this year! Jan x
-
sure thing :)
-
noticed the first flower in the pumpkin patch on the way to work this morning - unfortunately it's on the baby bears and not the Hundred weight - won't be long!
I planted mine out last week after being in the greenhouse and there is some yellowing of the older leaves - should I take these off? It can't be a deficiency as i dug a load of rotted manure in the bottom and added FB&B to the compost.
-
I now have about 8 female flowers on mine. I will let a couple set fruit then pinch them off. I am pretty confident I have got this sown up. Watch out ICE ha haah ha :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

You might have a lot of female flowers but they need male ones to set the fruit. 8) I have hand pollinated three of my Atlantic Giants and they are growing like crazy.
Now, will I have the heart to remove any excess pumkins or not? It's not that cut and dried.
-
Be on the safe side Ice - leave one as a back-up ;)
Am I right that you are also taking part in the tallest sunflower competition too?

Ah, the halcyon days of school.
My school experience was a bit different…. in the days of streaming:
At Junior school I started off in the B stream but was rapidly promoted to the P stream. The “P”, or so the parents were told, stood for progress of which I evidently made very little!
It was not until I arrived at the secondary mod that things began to improve when, after a bit of a nasty incident, I decked the school’s biggest bully (more by accident than intention). From then on I was given a wide berth by the school’s rough bunch and actually began to relax, learn and enjoy being there.
A change of gear and some good competition from my best mate got me from the bottom to the top. Thank heavens for the change to Comprehensive School or I would not have had the opportunity to tackle GCSEs and then A levels in the years I had left. ;)
-
I would join in if any of my pumpkins actualy didnt fall off. Grrrrrrrrrr. Which they all seem to do.
Glad it's not just me then!
-
I can't see me winning a size prize for a pumpkin, its my first go at growing them and I'm a lot further north than most of you, but I have got one fruit so far, about the size of a golfball yesterday when I found it. :)
-
I would join in if any of my pumpkins actualy didnt fall off. Grrrrrrrrrr. Which they all seem to do.
Glad it's not just me then!
I've been hand polinating mine which seems to have helped and then removing the flower before it goes too mushy - no drop offs yet (I do only have 3 fruit so far but they all seem to be getting bigger!). Last year I only got one fruit (as all the others dropped off) and it didn't ripen in time.
-
Is there a prize for whose goes furthest across the garden? We have two golf balls on ours but it's now half way across the lawn and we have to climb over it to get indoors!
-
just an update before it gets a prune i promised the wife it wouldnt take over the garden, but its having a good try  i have two set now so its game on . hopefully the pictures will upload .

We have loads growing brilliantly now, altho I tried that 3 sisters planting technique (planting beans, corn and pumpkins together) however the pumpkins are now blocking the light to the corn- OH DEAR :tongue2:

I asked the Zamboni driver at my local ice rink to pop over and remove all the dust from my mumber three pumpkin's backup reserve.

Is it just Ice and myself that's managing to anything?
Lots of names on that list or , is it a case of 'keeping one's powder dry'?
-
I have pumpkins!
I was about to give up and dig up the plants but I counted 3 pumpkins yesterday - at last. They are enormous - at least 3 inches across
Can I enter my squash instead, the Crown Prince are getting really big now! I know what our winter diet is going to be. Courgette Soup and roasted squash...
-
I am new to this growing lark, and planted a "Jack o'Lantern" pumpkin, which is probably not going to beat anybody ::).
Here it is
(http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab224/Starlinglp/Allotment%202010/DSCF2143.jpg)
it is about 6 inch in diameter.
-
I've got a pumpkin too - I don't want to measure it, in case I'm tempting fate! ::) It did nearly succumb to the chickens yesterday, so they are now banned from free ranging!! :nowink:
-
that's a lovely looking pumpkin starling :) mine is the size of a 2p piece

Cheers blackcap....i'm still a newbie to this growing lark

Thanks blackcap, I would not have had a clue, must go tomorrow and check under all the leaves for any more lurking around :)
Hope you are having as much fun learning as me Dom :D

The problems will come later Ice. Where will you find tape measures long enough!

NASA have promised to have the space station pass overhead and send me a measurement.

Must add a photo soon, I have 3 growing, the largest is about 10" across atm. Is that par for the course at this stage?

Hi Starling, yes i'm having loads of fun, we had a meal the other night and everything except the chicken came from the allotment......great feeling

It might be a bit off a mutant but beauty is in the eye of the beholder :D :D :D

Lights gone out?
Eclipse of the pumpkin!

I have a couple growing - one larger one but don't think they will beat anyone's as they are only 'halloween' pumpkins and not a mammoth variety!

A bicycle pump might be the answer ;)

This year the allotments been that wet we should have grown rice - so here to cheer me up is my 72 and a half pounder from 2008.
Remember to stay in touch as they reach full size...

tee hee

Hey there guys, is it too late to join in? ::)
I've got a atlantic giant in a large growbag and is pretty small yet, experimenting to see how big it can get and growing in a grow bag becuase I haven't much ground soil!

i've added you to the list :)

Giant Atlantic jobs, huh ..... reminds me of a crazy eco-terrorism idea I had a few years back, whereby I'd jaunt out on midnight crusades (in ninja-esque attire), with a sack of giant pumpkin seeds - and like, target key buildings with immense numbers of these babies ..... Imagine the chaos and horror this would cause when they sprouted.

one positive thing has come to life so far ,the local vicar called at the house on friday looking to see what I was entering in the the show because he is interested in veg and gardening , well we went for a wander around the garden and he liked what he saw and spotted the pumpkin well he was very impressed and I told him about the competition on here ,and I jokingly said could we use it to raise money for the church he asked when it would be fully grown and I admitted that I didn't have a clue . We talked and came to a decision that on halloween we would weigh it at the village party and people could guess the weight at 50p a time, money will be donated to good cause

That sounds great - what a smashing idea! ;)
You could also point the gardeners and chicken keepers in the direction of the AVG web-site :)

Hi, Could you add me too please, I have 4 plants none with fruits as yet, I was a little late this year but Autumn comes later here anyway :-) Is there a 'closing date'?
-
At the moment the closing date is Septober. :D It might be a good idea to set a date though. Blackcap1000 is organising things so wait until we get a reply from him. :)
-
Please put me on the list too. I have two plants but no idea on the type as they were free seeds in a plain white pack stating "pumpkin" on it. lol.
-
Are we having a "smallest pumpkin" competition too? I now have 3 and the biggest is all of 4 inches across.... they are being dwarfed by my Crown Prince squash.
-
Hi, Could you add me too please,
Please put me on the list too.
i've added you both to the list :)
September ? that's way to soon ice :( OK the closing date is Halloween, that's the 31st of October for anyone who doesn't know :)
i'll put it on the front page
-

An interesting idea that.... I'll pop over the sunflower growing competition and have a go at suggesting the shortest... I might be in with a chance ;)

Recent pic of mine.
Keep growing son.

Go to the top of the class.
Oh, you already did. 8)

I've got quite a large pumpkin growing that we have to step over now to get down the garden path but it's green and not yellow like I expect a pumpkin to be! It's also very soft and spongy. It also came from a white packet of seeds with no name on that I got with a magazine.
-
just a quick update on mine ,its taking over the garden now

Looks good Philskin.
Competitions hotting up.
Anyone else throwing hat into the ring with promising specimens?
-
Tiny fruit appeared ( about 1cm across) - hoping for a late sprint!

Go to the top of the class.
Oh, you already did. 8)
Then very quickly out through the nearest open door
-
Wow philskin! Monster pumpkinalready!!
I have a couple now but the biggest one is no mare than about 5" accross at the moment. I will be happy if I get one big enough for the kids to carve at Halloween.
-
Hey my proper first introduction of my pumpkin. I grew this in one of those 100 litres grow bags and filled it with multipurose compost and nothing else. Picture below with size comparison to a stanley knife!
-
WOW your pumpkins are awsome!!!
I planted seeds in the spring and NOTHING atall happened. Is there a tip you could all give me so I can join the competition next year? ;)
Karen xx
-
Hey unlucky about the seeds not sprouting. Its my first time vegetable gardening this year and ill offer advice based on what ive done this year.
I planted 6 seeds in 6 different 9cm pots of multipurpose compost, kept the soil constantly moist but not waterclogged. After they developed 1 big true leaf I would pick the best one and plant into well prepared ground with alot of organic material (compost). I dont have much planting ground so I got a large grow bag and just filled it with multipurpose compost (downside is it dries out very quickly!).
Then I will just keep watering the pumpkin and I occasionally fed it with a mixture of tomato feed and little sulphate of potash mixed up.
Thats all i did and im watching it grow well everyday! :) Hope this is any help
-
Thanks GD
Yeah, I planted my seeds straight out, think I'll mother them a bit more next year ;)
Thanks for the tips, I'd love to grow our own Halloween Pumpkins! :)
Karen
-
mine didn't germinate either ,but i do have a squash plant that is a triffid and today i saw my first butternut making a show :)
-
I was giving up on my pumpkins. When I checked on Monday I had three, all about 4 inches diameter.
Been away for a few days, went yesterday and found one of the pumpkins has trebled in size, the others are doubled. Amazing what a bit of rain can do!!
Mine aren't going to be giants (they are "Connecticut Field") but at least they might reach a respectable size :D
-
i have one pumpkin about the size of a golf ball. as long as the kids have one to carve i'm happy :)
-

mine are green too

mines yellow

:)I was wondering Can I enter?
I have a giant pumpkin-my first time growing,I only have 3 pumpkins on two plants, all the others seem to rot away anyone know what is the reason for this?
I have taken two pictures over the weekend, this on is reasonable for an Atlantic giant,16" x" x !6" and approx 46" circumference.
I have no idea how large these are supposed to grow
-
i've added you to the list Missie :)
WOW........your pumpkin is huge ;)
-
Its awkward to get a clear pic of mine but I managed to get a tape measure around her ,im sure there are dark horses out there with bigger ,ive shown you mine lets see yours lol

oh ice it would only be 20" if i did that lol
-
Ive snapped my one and only pumpkin off today
Gutted! Why cant I grow pumps or squash just ONCE?
-
I managed to get a tape around the middle of mine. Not too shabby for my first ever pumpkin and with no gather at the back of the tape. :tongue2:
-
I would love to enter but its my first year growing pumpkins so I don't think mine will be very good...
...all your pumpkins are so big....you have worried me now :)
-
If I take the tape and measure the pumpkin over the largest area it is actually 56" Philskin ;)though if i place it just as ice has then it is a mere 52" :)
-
Why do some of the little ones die away though?!!!
-

They might not have been pollinated.
-
WOW they look really good, my pumpkins are nothing like that but still proud of our first attempt, the biggest is about the size of my son's head(5 years old). Not that childrens heads are the best measure but it will do for now :tongue2:

Ah well I'm not in with any chance anyway... my prize pumpkin is never going to be a giant, it's only a medium variety. But in my eyes it's lovely !!

Anyway....back to the competition.
Here's recent photos of mine and the reserve.
I believe that works out as 60 inches.
-
flippin' eck!I'm glad I couldn't post my photos!
-
my Pumpkin on the left, looking a bit poxy by comparison, neighbours on the right(luckily he's not in the competition :tongue2:)put my little finger in to show size and that hasn't worked!
-
Well this is my not-prize-winning pumpkin. It's "Connecticut Field" which is not a big variety. It's doing well though and there are a couple of smaller ones too.
My Crown Prince are doing brilliantly and are almost as big!!
-
Very quick update on the pumps! Sorry took the pictures in a rush, pumpkins are roughly that length across, they are more wide than tall, bit like myself! :tongue2:

Longer tape measures are available Ice ;)
-
Just to say that, after a shaky shart, they are so up and runnnnning!!!!!!!. I went this afternoon to water everything, including the pumpkin, and went to inspect it, and found that I've got another, even bigger one, hiding amongst the courgettes (I planted the pumkins amoungst them to hide them - its like hiding a tree in a forest :D.
I'm so excited. :D
I've tried putting photos on, but it doesn't seem to work :(
If both of them do grow, I hope to donate them to the local children's hospitals - Booth Hall and Pendlebury
-
Longer tape measures are available Ice ;)
As I said previously, NASA have promised to send the space station overhead to measure it. All I have to do is ask. :)
-
Well I can safely say I'm out of the competition! My largest pumpkin shows some hints of changing from green to orange and I think it has stopped growing...with a waistline of a mere 34 inches!
Saw on GW that their monster pumpkin plants took up the space of half a tennis court each...I really don't have the space for that in my garden! ::)
-
My pumpkins are apparently clearly visible on google earth, dont need NASA ;) ;) ;)
-
That's the problem with you amateur growers. I need NASA to measure as they correct for the gravitational field that mine produce due to their enormous size. By the way, I'm still talking about pumpkins here. 8)
-
Reliably informed that mine is now 63 inches circumfrance.
Not quite 90 inches like Ice.
-
there we have the problem ice ,apparently the magnetic field that your pumpkin is putting out is effecting the gravitational pull of the poles and without the dylytheim chrystals the space station cant settle on my pumpkin long enough to calibrate a true reading ,its hovering somewhere between 99" and 25 ft so not accurate enough but when the space time continuant appears will try again
-

At least it has neither made nor disappeared into a back hole! :)
-
Can we join too?
We're actually growing a pumpkin to enter into the local village competition, but we'll be digging it up early as the show is on the 11th Sept.
Can we enter this one as a sideline?
My son (who is in charge of most pumpkin preening) tells me that the girth is about 65" so far. NASA tell me they're not that bothered as the're getting calls from some bloke with a pumpkin twice the size...

and for the rest of you (everyone else already on the list) i want to see some photos and information on the progress of all your pumpkins 8)

33"(86cm) but should Ice or philskin create a black hole into which all the other pumpkins get sucked, it could still be the winner :tongue2:

I'm working on it. ;)

All my squashes and pumpkins appear to be one large tangle at the moment , so I may have to wait until the foliage dies down before I can find a pumpkin!! Perhaps if my arm myself with a camera and a machete I can get a pic!!
-

im working on a parallel universe were slugs and snails or weeds don't exist and all veg is tasty and healthy
-
Worthy of several nobel prizes :D
-
competetive spirit took over tonight(or was it the elderflower booze) Just had to measure a pumpkin and take some photos. Will post a close-up if tape doesnt show up
-
Here's the close-up. Just notice tape not round the widest part, must realy be over 8foot,lol
-
Heaven knows what the patch is like after this rain deluge.
Sun at the weekend hopefully.

So I went outside today and my pumpkin plants have blown all over and i have nothing to show for it this year - so to cheer me up heres 2008s
-
Pleased to report that after a brief visit to the office, the 'winner' is about 70 inches and looking ok.
Plus...I couldn't lift it which is a good sign......and yes....before you all jump on the joke wagon...I'm not that weak.

i've just been for a walk around my allotment site and everyone has huge pumpkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mines still growing...72 inches.
Its gone very quiet here from the usual suspects.
Or, are people playing poker?

pompy spud is that the circumference from stem end to blossom end at its largest point.
The estimated weight is 116lbs

nooooo.
All the way round.

Yep....even if it's from Bandit country.
Good job they're not members on here.....no chance.

Mine has stopped as well. All the vines are dying off. I will leave on until cold weather is forecast.
Harvested my Invincibles...5 good sized ones all matured.
-
mine's about the size of a football and growing fast, only set about 3 weeks ago so hopefully it will get bigger before it gives up

You'll need some warm weather which i think judging by the long term forecast is 'no chance'.

can everyone let me know what your final size is please (in a few weeks) and i''l stick it next to your name ;)
i got the idea from Jamie

Hi loves, How are we measuring the pumpkin are we doing it by weight or measure around the pumpkin ?
Mine is turning orange now so I think that means its growing is done Is that right? I have 2 biggons more than a football size doubt Im on the way to winning thou lol!
xxx
-

i think that's right :) we will be measuring the girth of the pumpkin.
-
Went out yesterday to find one half eaten, mushy pumpkin - was my biggest - not sure what happened there!! I do have another following on but much smaller >:(. Still we still have a few weeks - best I start talking to it kindly :D
-
Mine was 58", but sadly it had turned to mush inside and has gone to pumpkin heaven, the green bin. :(

Flowerpower Junior entered his pumpkin last Saturday in the local show and beat all the adults hands down for the second year in a row! Bless....
It weighed in at 173.8lbs (or 12 stone!)
Am still trying to find a piece of string long enough to go round. Will report back.
Meanwhile, I am giving this post a second go at loading a photo. (ARGH!!)
-
YIPEEE!! It worked!
-
should i put that by your name then ice ?
Yes please. It met a sticky, (and putrid) end, may it rest in peas.

Never grown a pumpkin but for some reason I do still persevere with Gardener's World on Beeb2 and tonight, unless I wasn't paying proper attention, the only mention of vegetables was Toby's pumpkin which he said is due to feature in a a competition in a few weeks's time.
Should we let him join us?
-
does alys's mint count as a veg mention, and there was veg in the soup ::)
-
how do you know when to pick your pumpkin ?
-
i'm no expert but i pick when the skin changes colour or when the plant dies back and before any frosts
-
All gone very quiet on the pumpkin front.
Apart from Ice....awww:).....how's everyone else shaping up?
-
heres mine, i've been trying all day to upload this :) its a bit small as you can tell by that one pound
-
RIP pumpkin. (http://bestsmileys.com/crying/2.gif)
It's gone to a better place.
-
:tongue2:
-
Size isn't everything bigB. :tongue2:
-
it sure isn't, but it helps
-
Hey all!
Just thought i'd post my very first effort. I'm quite proud as this is my first allotment year and I thought I had planted courgettes! :tongue2:
The plant was riddled with mildew so I bought the pumpkin indoors today to be sure.
The circumference is 105cm, weight unknown atm, need some bathroom scales to borrow!
-

-
You just need a set of wheels for that one but watch the mid-night chimes ;)
-
javascript, would you like me to put 105cm next to your name ? :)
-
Hehe...well done Growing. Great seeing the kids involved.
I'll cut mine soon but the weather is soooo nice at the mo.
-
I've just had a fantastic holiday in the US; got back on Sunday :D, and went to the allotment when I found that some moron had smashed my two pumpkins to bits - before I left, my biggest pumpkin measured 33" in diameter. Really gutted :(
-
javascript, would you like me to put 105cm next to your name ? :)
JavaScript? I prefer jsgreen89 :tongue2:
But yes 105cm or 41 inches I guess!!
-
sorry ::)

-
Ok,Phew,we have just managed to put the tape measure around,it now measures 185cm in circumference-that is almost 6'1",My word it is extremely heavy!
-
failed dismally - just hoping for one for my boys for halloween :-(
-
i've put that by your name missie
Junie, oh deer :(
-
So this was my effort - no where near a winner as you can see! Measured a while ago when it was green:

Count me out - my large variety never popped their heads up. Just got the bog standard ones.
-
Think mine says 34 inches in the photo? ;) No-where near a winner. :( ::)
-
okey dokey ;) thanks
-
My biggest Jack O'Lantern is 79cm/31", so respectable but not big enough to trouble the judges.
Better luck next year ::).
-
Can we have a smallest comp too - I have one about 6 inches round at then moment and the plants are dying off!!! :(
The other is hopefully going to be just big enough for a Jack o Lantern.
-
I cut mine off from the plant today and cleared the bed for garlic. Will take a photo and measure it at the weekend.
Any one got any easy ideas how to weigh them? We got a comp running on our small site, its to be judged by weight(nonone happy with any form of measurement) and somehow i've been deemed the judge :( :(.
-
sutty1 this should help its inches to lbs all the best Griff

Just popping on to say how much I enjoy reading this thread. I've grown Atlantic Giant and Rouge De E'tames or whatever it is this year. All my pumps are now in the greenhouse, except one last late developer that I'm desperately hoping will redden up before frost kills it.
I look forward to seeing some photos of the monsters!
-
if you like theweeshep i can add you to the comp ? :)
-
Thanks BigB, but mine don't stand a chance.
I grew them in containers (big 90 litre jobbies mind) so have been quite pleased to have got 5 good size cinderellas off two plants. The Atlantic Giant produced just one and it weighs a guesstimated 25 kilos. Not very big, but it'll carve up nice for halloween :)
They have absolutely trashed my grass paths between the veg beds... :D
-
lol, ok ;)
-
Count me out too, I had one pumpkin which made it and it's only a medium sized one..
Next time I'll go for a big'un!
-
ok pennyS
-
This is my kin, I did not enter the comp tho
-
i could put you down if you want ? but i would need to know the girth mearurement :)
-
I will measure it in the week big B. Cheers :)
-
ok :)
-
Boo hoo :( Not even close lol
A massive........ 8"
Ah well, better look next year me thinks
Congratulations to everyone that has a pumpkin worthy of displaying at halloween... mine are destined for the pot :D
-
that a bit better than what mine did :(
anyone else ? there is still a huge list :)
-
Keeping powder dry at the mo. A pic for verification for everyone...serious stuff..:)
Weighed mine. 95 lbs. Larger than last year.
-
is there any chance you could measure it pompey spud ? :)
-
will do for tomoz for tomoz...with a pic.
A pic is needed for entry i assume.
-
not needed but it is nice :)
-
At the mo my kin is 67", when is the end date ?
-
october 31st ;)
-
This is quite exciting! mine has grown since last time, nobody can lift it?! I shall post more pics towards the end of the comp ::)
-
that's great :)
-
its gone quite quiet in the pumpkin patch.
anyone there ? there's still a big list :)
-
sorry to mine didnt germinate so no competition from me im affraid , did manage to get some nice butternut squash though not very big :)

My pumpkins never amount to much but I do enjoy carving them.....
I've just bought myself a pumpkin carving kit ready for this years efforts!

Rather surprisingly the Big Max has ended up as 48”, while the Atlantic Giant has ended up as 39”. No winners there, but would have thought the Atlantic Giant would do better.
I would take a photo, but the neighbours will think I am strange if I go to the garage with a tape measure and camera....
-
My neighbours think I'm strange anyway as I plant cabbage plants with a cordless drill.
-
Not many results in yet, will measure mine tomorrow. Surely most have stoped growing by now.
Does anyone know how that 1400lb'er is doing, just tried a quick google and couldnt find any info!!
-
Not sure sutty1, but i do know that in the GYO magazine theres a 584.4kg  :D
-
Don't think thats the one jamie, there was a link on this thread to one being grown by twin brothers in the UK that looked might it might bring the world record to the UK.
I'll have to search a bit more!!
-
Just got back from the town's pumpkin weigh-in.
At just under 95lb......I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not quite American size but hey....and I wont let it change my life.
Rather a cool trophy goes with it.
Plus the all important measurement is.......... 73inches
-
WOW..... pompey spud, i'll put that next to your name ;)
-
Oh dear, count me out, Al my Atlantic giant were enjoyed by slugs
I do have some green ones ( not sure if they count) but they are only just large enough for a Jack O Lantern at a circunference of 26 inches .
-
i've put 26 in next to your nme Junie ;)
-
Is the measurement around the circumference or pole to pole?
-
next year we will weigh pumpkins instead :(
-
Finally got it moved away from water butt, chimney pot, fence etc. and measured. 7ft. As photo shows tape not quite round the widest part. Our chairman was holding the tape, have to moan at him tomorrow, lol
-
7 foot all the way round, WOW.........that would be 84in then, is that right ?
-
Hehe...doesn't quite look 7ft..lol
-
:( I have a problem, the only scales I have go up to 35kg,I just know my kin weighs more than this, any ideas please,I have a friend coming tomorrow to help us lift it from the bed and into the shed-he could not lift it on his own
Cannot use the bathroom scales-they'd be lost under it,I doubt if my gp would let us in with it? nor the chemist....
-
missie, i've borrowed some digital bathroom scales, apparently most off them store the last weight so you can lift pumpkin off and see the weight, hope this helps
-
Don't tell me sutty..yours weighed 5 tonnes. ::)
-
i wish :) :) but we not weighing till sunday, theres atleast one on our site well bigger than mine :( :( :D
-
only ten day left so get those measurements in asap :)

No problem..... I'm just waiting for the plasterers to finish off so I can get on with a quick trip to the plot on my "day off" ;)
-
I have indeed borrowed some digital scales and the result is 72KG or 159.2Lbs and last measurement is a mere 74.5",now I know this shall not win,(especially against sutty'1s!;-)..thanks for the scales idea!),however, this is my very first attempt to growing kins so I do not think I have done too badly?
-
so I do not think I have done too badly?
not at all, mine was only 41.5 :)
thanks for the measurment ;)

9 days left. ;)

i'd love to grow a pumpkin that size next year ::)
I can get good odds on the fact that you won't!
-
Thats a great effort Missie. Mine might have a bigger girth but i dont think it weighs anywhere near yours. I'll let you know after its weighed on Sunday :)
-
only eight days left
-
Hiya. we had a weigh-in today! As i thought mine only 149.5lbs Missie.
Best on our small site for weight 238ib's :) :D :)
-
6 days left
-
I had to bring mine in a few weeks ago. I was quite happy with my first effort but forgot to measure or weigh it as I new it was no competition for some of the monsters I've seen posted on here. Hopefully better luck next year!
-
ok :)
-
My biggest one weighs in at 10 3/4 LB and is 32" in circumference, all the others are 31" so at least I'm consistent!
-
As we had a sharp frost forecast for last night i thought i'd better get them in and measure them, 7 in total sizes as follows:
121cm
124cm
125cm
131cm (2)
140cm and
154cm
very pleased with my first attempt.
If I have mastered the technology there should be a photo at the end of this, only 5 left neighbours having collected their promised fruit . The best one is extreme left.
-
superb, i've put those by your names :D
-
Learner, my name's still on ya list!
page 35... mine was a massive 8" ;-(
-
still a big list and only 5 days left. anyone who hasn't given there measurment, please do it asap, if you don't get your measurment in by 12am on the 31st it will not be counted. the winner will be annouced on the 1st November

What have i done :ohmy::unsure: :(
so what do i do now ? :(
-
I guess you send big grovelling apologies to Missie and SUTTY, and make a correction here.
Good luck
-
thanks.
ok everyone, there was a mess up with the measurment counting (my fault )
i'm very sorry to missie who i thought Won, and i'm also sorry to SUTTY1 who actually Won.
my bad :(
-
Suggest next year that it's done by weight.
-
yep!
-
Hiya,
No need to apologise bigB, where all human and make mistakes.
I thought it just a mix-up or even a practical joke :) :)
A big THANKS for running the competition. Hope you will do it again next year
Steve
-
It was the fun of taking part that counts....... although I didn't
-
If the pumpkin grown on an adjoining plot is anything to go by, some will have to be cut up and weighed in sections
-
Thanks for doing this BigB, ive realy enjoed watching everyones progress :D :D :D :D :D :D
-
thanks everyone
i'd love to do it again next year, but lets do it by weight instead :)
-
Won't doing it by weight lead to legal action for bad backs!!! :D
Also - all scales measure differently, whereas all tape measures tend to be the same ( unless they are stretched and they will read smaller!! ???
-
What we need is a list of suggestions for judging / measuring the best pumpkin of the season then we could have a vote on how this should be judged.
So far we have:
Any other suggestions?
-
As virtually every other pumpkin weigh off is done by weighing strangely enough...ahem...makes sense.
Surely the organiser of the comp should have the choice and it's up to people to enter.
I noticed that some people measured with the metal tapes and others with cloth tapes. The accuracy would differ.
Easier to take pics to prove your pumpkin. A pic of it with the weight scribbled on.
-
Surely the organiser of the comp should have the choice and it's up to people to enter.
i agree
-

i agree
as long as the organiser knows what he's doing :tongue2:
-
i hope so ::)
-
i hope so ::)
And so say all of us!!
-
Well done Sutty! And also well done Missie for your monster second placement!!
As a suggestion, for next year, you could look at 2 categories? Heaviest and also, largest, one winner in each category?? That way, people with bad backs for lifting/weighing can still take part in the fun?
-
Just a thought why dont we cross-over the sunflower and pumpkin comps.
Go for:
Tallest pumpkin
Heaviest sunflower
That way easy for everyone to measure and no one will get injured :) :D :) :D :) :D
But seriously if peolpe like jamie and bigB are willing to run these comps i think they should set the rules. At the end of the day the main theme is to have a laugh and a bit of banter!

But a set of rules is needed :D

Tallest pumpkin
Heaviest sunflower
LOL very funny! :D
I agree that its easier for whoever running the comp to set the rules... just making a suggestion to keep everyone happy?! Diplomacy eh? More fun when its inclusive.
As for heaviest sunflower... what about largest pea? Then i might have a chance....
-
what about largest pea? Then i might have a chance....
 i'd have no chance

Any particular sort of pea? ???
(Let's not go there! ;) )

Sorry I didnt get back in time well done to the winner ,I dont know the measurment of mine but it went on the scales at over 60lb I cant say exactly because the guess the weight draw will be done again next week in church . But I raised £30 on bonfire night so if it raises any more it will be a decent gift to charity
thanks for running the comp see you next year
